What does a Structural Engineering Lecturer do?
What is the difference between Structural Engineering Lecturer vs Structural Engineer?
| Aspect | Structural Engineering Lecturer | Structural Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically a master's or Ph.D. in structural engineering or related field; teaching certifications may be preferred | Bachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering; professional engineering license often required |
| Work Environment | Academic settings such as universities and colleges, primarily teaching and research | Design, analysis, and construction sites; consulting firms, construction companies, or government agencies |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Educational institutions, research organizations | Engineering firms, construction companies, infrastructure projects |
While both roles require a strong background in structural engineering, a Structural Engineering Lecturer focuses on teaching and research within academic institutions, whereas a Structural Engineer applies engineering principles directly to design and construction projects. The choice depends on whether you prefer academia or practical engineering work.

Cal Poly Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). There are also many opportunities at Humboldt to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures, with resources in Special Collections at the Cal Poly Humboldt library. The Humboldt Room in the Library has fantastic resources for tribally focused archive materials from the region. Humboldt strives to build a supportive and inclusive Native community and engages with Native communities through initiatives and opportunities like the annual California Indian Big Time, Indigenous People's Week, and a chance to network with other faculty and staff as part of the Cal Poly Humboldt Council of American Indian Faculty and Staff.
