What is a structural engineer project manager?

Structural Engineer Project Managers are professionals who oversee the design, planning, and execution of construction projects with a focus on structural integrity and safety. They combine engineering expertise with project management skills to ensure that structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure are built according to specifications, codes, and budgets. Their responsibilities include coordinating teams, managing timelines and resources, ensuring compliance with regulations, and communicating with clients and stakeholders. They play a crucial role in solving technical challenges and delivering projects successfully from conception to completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer project manager?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer Project Manager, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, project management, and typically a PE license or equivalent engineering certification. Proficiency with design and analysis software like AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools, as well as experience with project management systems, is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set top candidates apart by enabling effective team coordination and client relations. These skills ensure safe, efficient project delivery that meets technical standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineer project managers when balancing technical design with project management duties?

Structural Engineer Project Managers often navigate the dual responsibilities of delivering technically sound designs while also meeting project deadlines, budgets, and client expectations. One common challenge is allocating time between detailed engineering analysis and essential project management tasks such as coordinating teams, managing stakeholders, and overseeing documentation. Additionally, they must continually adapt to changes in project scope or site conditions while ensuring all safety and regulatory standards are met. Successful professionals in this role develop strong organizational and communication skills to effectively lead multidisciplinary teams and keep projects on track.

At Clark Pacific, the Senior Structural Engineering Manager leads a team of talented engineers in the design and delivery of innovative precast concrete structural systems for some of the nation's most complex and high-profile projects, including data centers, semiconductor fabrication facilities, healthcare, commercial, and other mission-critical structures.

This is an opportunity to lead both people and projects while influencing the future of structural engineering within an integrated design-build environment. As a technical leader, you will guide engineering teams, serve as an Engineer of Record when required, collaborate across departments, and help drive innovation in precast concrete design and construction.

If you're passionate about developing engineers, solving complex structural challenges, and leading projects from concept through completion, we'd love to hear from you.

Competitive Compensation: $130,000 – $215,000 annually, depending on experience.

Location: Ontario, CA

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Exercise a high level of professionalism and confidentiality when working with staff, projects, clients, and proprietary information.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Structural Engineers while fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Direct the structural design of full precast concrete systems, including prestressed floors, beams, walls, columns, slabs, stairs, and related structural components.

  • Oversee structural calculations, engineering details, drawings, and technical submittals for multiple concurrent projects.
  • Provide technical leadership in the analysis and design of reinforced and prestressed concrete systems, including lateral force-resisting systems.
  • Manage engineering workloads, resources, and project priorities to meet aggressive schedules while maintaining quality.
  • Partner closely with Project Management, Manufacturing, and Field Operations to ensure constructability and successful project execution.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients throughout the design and construction process.
  • Identify engineering risks and develop practical, cost-effective structural solutions.
  • Promote continuous improvement, innovation, and engineering excellence throughout the department.
  • Represent Clark Pacific within industry organizations such as PCI and other professional associations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years leading or managing engineering teams.
  • Experience serving as the lead structural engineer or design manager on large, complex structural projects.
  • Strong experience in the analysis and design of reinforced concrete structural systems, including lateral force-resisting systems.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage multiple engineering projects while meeting demanding schedules.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • Experience designing mission-critical facilities such as data centers, semiconductor fabrication plants, healthcare, or advanced manufacturing facilities.
  • Experience with precast and prestressed concrete design.
  • Familiarity with precast manufacturing and erection practices.
  • Active participation in PCI or other structural engineering organizations through committee work, publications, or leadership roles.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong technical expertise in structural engineering and reinforced concrete design.
  • Experience with structural analysis software such as RISA, RAM, ETABS, or similar programs.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable building codes and standards including CBC, IBC, ASCE, ACI, and AISC.
  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Ability to solve complex engineering challenges through practical, innovative solutions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Revit, AutoCAD, or BIM software is a plus.
