What is structural bioinformatics?

A Structural Bioinformatics job involves applying computational techniques to analyze and predict the three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules, such as proteins, DNA, and RNA. Professionals in this field develop algorithms, use molecular modeling software, and analyze structural data from experiments like X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. Their work helps in drug discovery, protein engineering, and understanding biomolecular functions. Structural bioinformaticians often collaborate with biologists, chemists, and data scientists to interpret structural data and derive meaningful biological insights.

What does a structural bioinformatics professional do?

As a Structural Bioinformatics professional, your daily responsibilities often include analyzing protein or nucleic acid structures, developing computational models, and interpreting experimental data in collaboration with laboratory scientists. You may regularly use molecular modeling tools and scripting languages to visualize, predict, or simulate biomolecular interactions. Additionally, you’ll participate in research meetings, contribute to scholarly publications, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, such as computational chemists, biologists, or pharmaceutical researchers. The role offers a dynamic blend of independent analytical work and team-based problem solving, making it ideal for those who enjoy both technical challenges and collaborative research environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for structural bioinformatics?

To thrive in Structural Bioinformatics, candidates typically need a solid background in molecular biology, computational modeling, and advanced data analysis, often supported by a degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as PyMOL, Chimera, molecular dynamics software, and scripting languages like Python or R is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help professionals stand out in multidisciplinary research and development teams. These capabilities are crucial for accurately modeling biomolecular structures, interpreting complex datasets, and driving innovative discoveries in areas like drug design and protein engineering.

Job description

About Rezo Therapeutics
Rezo is a different kind of biopharma company. Our mission is to dramatically increase the success rate of drug development by building a disease-agnostic, fully-integrated, network biology platform that will redefine our understanding of human disease and ability to treat it.
We are leveraging a unique integrated approach, combining capabilities in genetics, proteomics, structural biology and AI to generate deep biological insights and novel therapeutic approaches.
Located in San Francisco's vibrant Mission Bay neighborhood, Rezo is in close proximity to UCSF, numerous urban amenities, and outdoor recreational opportunities. We recognize that realizing our mission depends as much on our people as it does on our science and are building a workplace that fosters collaboration, respect, and diversity where contributing to your team's success is valued as highly as individual achievements. If you're passionate about team science and breaking down barriers to progress in drug development, please consider joining us!
The Opportunity
We are hiring at the Staff / Senior Staff level for a Bioinformatics / Data Scientist to join Rezo's Computational Biology and AI Team. In this role, you will collaborate with an interdisciplinary group combining genetics, proteomics and structural biology to tackle challenging biological questions and develop transformative therapies. You will combine your deep expertise and statistical rigor to analyzing biological data with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to biological and computational audiences. The impact of your work will extend beyond building tools and performing analyses to directly impact therapeutic program decisions. Joining Rezo at this stage provides an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement analyses across Rezo's protein network datasets, refining existing approaches and developing new methods as needed.
  • Integrate multi-omics data to build mechanistic and translational understanding of our programs, spanning from mechanism of action to patient biomarker selection strategies.
  • Build internal tools and interfaces that enable the rest of the company to explore the data and make decisions based on conducted analyses.
  • Familiar with ML methods, including interpreting results and experience curating data for ML methods.
  • Communicate results clearly in writing, figures and presentations so that the analyses can be translated into program decisions.

Qualifications:
  • PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, cancer biology or related field with 8+ years of industry experience.
  • Deep experience analyzing at least three of the following -omic datasets: transcriptomics, proteomics and their variants (e.g. phosphoproteomics, etc.), AP-MS / interactomic data and functional genomics (e.g. DepMap, CRISPR screens).
  • Strong python engineering skills. Comfortable working in a shared codebase and using software engineering best practices, including code reviews.
  • Clear demonstrations of the ability to take a biological question from raw data to a concrete mechanistic or translational conclusion.
  • Working fluency in cancer biology, including oncogenic signaling, tumor suppressors, cell cycle and the use of biomarker classification to distinguish sensitive versus resistant populations.
  • Proven ability to work independently while fostering collaboration in a team environment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
