How much do structural biology jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for structural biology in the United States is $23.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $25.72 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Structural Biology position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Structural Biology, you need a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, and physics, generally supported by an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a related field. Proficiency with specialized software for molecular modeling (such as PyMOL or Chimera), as well as hands-on experience with technologies like X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and cryo-electron microscopy, is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and collaborative communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are key for accurately determining biomolecular structures and contributing valuable insights to biomedical research and drug discovery.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in Structural Biology?

Professionals in Structural Biology commonly spend their days designing and conducting experiments to analyze the three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules using techniques like X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, or NMR spectroscopy. They often collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including biochemists, computational modelers, and pharmaceutical researchers—to interpret data and inform research directions. In addition to laboratory work, significant time is dedicated to data analysis, preparing research presentations, and staying up to date with scientific literature. This dynamic environment requires flexibility, technical expertise, and an eagerness to solve complex scientific problems.

What is a Structural Biology job?

A Structural Biology job involves studying the molecular structure and function of biological macromolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, to understand their roles in cellular processes. Professionals in this field use techniques like X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and NMR spectroscopy to determine molecular structures. These roles are common in academic research, pharmaceutical development, and biotechnology companies, contributing to drug discovery and disease research.

Job description

 Company

Nurix Therapeutics is a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development, and commercialization of targeted protein degradation medicines, the next frontier in innovative drug design aimed at improving treatment options for patients with cancer and inflammatory diseases. Powered by a fully AI-integrated discovery engine capable of tackling any protein class, and coupled with unparalleled ligase expertise, Nurix's dedicated team has built a formidable advantage in translating the science of targeted protein degradation into clinical advancements. Nurix aims to establish degrader-based treatments at the forefront of patient care, writing medicine's next chapter with a new script to outmatch disease.

 Position Summary

This role is located at the interface of Nurix's DEL driven drug discovery engine and preclinical drug development platform. The strategic impact of this role is the elucidation and communication of small molecule interactions with drug targets to provide mechanistic understanding and guide design of clinical drug candidates. As a member of the early discovery department, you will make key contributions to validation and characterization of novel chemical matter for our targeted protein degradation platform. In addition to that, you will participate in multiple small and agile teams of drug discovery veterans and help achieve discovery and development milestones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute end-to-end gene-to-structure workflows: construct design, protein engineering, experimental planning, and structure determination
  • Determine high-resolution structures of protein-ligand and protein complexes using X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM
  • Own all aspects of sample preparation, data collection, processing, model building, refinement, and documentation
  • Translate structural findings into actionable insights for project teams, and present results to colleagues and senior leadership in written and oral formats
  • Partner with computational chemistry and machine learning groups to drive rational drug design and enhance proprietary computational platforms
  • Serve as a structural biology resource across the research organization, providing mechanistic rationale to support project decisions
  • Maintain rigorous laboratory records and contribute to scientific reports, publications, and patent filings
  • Help establish and continuously improve best practices, protocols, and SOPs within the structural biology group
  • Build and maintain deep command of the structural mechanisms of protein ubiquitylation and degradation

Qualifications

Required:

  • MS with 8 or more years' relevant experience or PhD in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related field; 4+ years of hands-on academic or industry experience. Exceptional candidates at the entry level will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated deep expertise in X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, or both. Independent deployment of both technologies is strongly preferred
  • Full proficiency in Phenix, Coot, CryoSPARC, RELION, PyMOL, and Chimera/ChimeraX
  • Exceptional attention to detail, rigorous record keeping, and keen scientific curiosity
  • Strong scientific communication skills with the ability to present complex structural data to diverse, cross-functional audiences
  • Ability to work strategically, independently, and collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrix research environment

Preferred:

  • Experience in drug discovery or biopharmaceutical setting is highly desirable
  • Experience with protein degrader technologies
  • Working experience with ubiquitin ligases, transcription factors, or membrane proteins
  • Additional skills in SAXS, NMR, HDX-MS, machine learning, or computational structural biology

Fit with Nurix Culture and Values

  • Collaborative and team-oriented, eager to share expertise and learn from others.
  • Solution-driven with a hands-on and resourceful approach.
  • Adaptable and comfortable in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Committed to scientific excellence and the shared goals of the team.
