How much do structural biology jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for structural biology in the United States is $23.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.19 and $25.72 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Structural Biology position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Structural Biology, you need a strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, and physics, generally supported by an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a related field. Proficiency with specialized software for molecular modeling (such as PyMOL or Chimera), as well as hands-on experience with technologies like X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and cryo-electron microscopy, is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and collaborative communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are key for accurately determining biomolecular structures and contributing valuable insights to biomedical research and drug discovery.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in Structural Biology?

Professionals in Structural Biology commonly spend their days designing and conducting experiments to analyze the three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules using techniques like X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, or NMR spectroscopy. They often collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—including biochemists, computational modelers, and pharmaceutical researchers—to interpret data and inform research directions. In addition to laboratory work, significant time is dedicated to data analysis, preparing research presentations, and staying up to date with scientific literature. This dynamic environment requires flexibility, technical expertise, and an eagerness to solve complex scientific problems.

What is a Structural Biology job?

A Structural Biology job involves studying the molecular structure and function of biological macromolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, to understand their roles in cellular processes. Professionals in this field use techniques like X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and NMR spectroscopy to determine molecular structures. These roles are common in academic research, pharmaceutical development, and biotechnology companies, contributing to drug discovery and disease research.

Job description

The Molecular Diagnostics and Drug Discovery (MD3) Laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), led by Dr. ukasz Jaremko, invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow position. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated early-career scientist to develop expertise in translational structural biology and drug discovery.

Research Focus
The successful candidate will contribute to projects focused on the structural and mechanistic characterization of biomolecular complexes relevant to cancer and other human diseases. The laboratory integrates chemical biology, biophysical, and structural approaches to elucidate molecular function and support rational drug design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative biochemical and biophysical research on protein structure, dynamics, and function.
  • Express, purify, and characterize recombinant proteins and complexes for X-ray, NMR, and cryo-EM.
  • Apply chemical biology tools to probe biomolecular interactions and mechanisms.
  • Participate in experimental design, data analysis, and dissemination of research findings through high-impact, peer-reviewed publications.
  • Collaborate with researchers across UTMB and partner institutions in Texas and nationwide on interdisciplinary projects in drug discovery and translational structural biology.

Preferred Background

  • Ph.D. awarded within the past five years in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in protein expression, purification, and biochemical or biophysical assays.
  • Prior exposure to structural biology methods such as X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, or cryo-EM is highly desirable.
  • Strong motivation to expand expertise in advanced NMR and cryo-EM techniques applied to translational research.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and teamwork skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D., M.D. or Doctoral equivalent in any field. Scientific research experience.

Application Materials

  • A detailed academic CV.
  • A cover letter describing research experience, interests, and motivation to join the MD3 Laboratory.
  • Names and contact information for two academic or professional references.

Salary
Commensurate with experience.

EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:
