Job description

We are seeking an experienced Travel Behavior & Demand Forecasting Specialist who is passionate about solving complex challenges and creating data driven transportation solutions for communities across the United States. 

 At Fehr & Peers, you'll work alongside travel behavior forecasting experts in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment where creativity, technical excellence, and innovation are highly valued. Our team combines advanced travel demand modeling, statistical analysis, and Big Data to answer critical planning and policy questions. 

 We are known for applying thoughtful, robust, and practical approaches that produce intuitive and actionable insights for our clients. We partner with MPOs, municipalities, transit agencies, private and institutional developers, technology firms, and civil engineering companies to tackle some of the industry's most complex transportation challenges. From special event planning and evacuation analysis to climate resilience and long-range forecasting, our work directly influences transportation investments and community outcomes nationwide. 

 Successful candidates will have experience developing and implementing travel demand, statistical, and data driven forecasting models to analyze multimodal transportation systems and emerging mobility trends. They should be comfortable working with traditional modeling tools as well as Big Data platforms and methods and enjoy exploring innovative approaches to improve forecasting accuracy and decision making. 

 In this role, you will serve as a trusted technical advisor to project managers and clients alike. You'll contribute expertise across a wide range of projects, lead key modeling and analytical tasks to deliver tailored forecasting solutions that help communities plan for a rapidly evolving transportation future. 

Responsibilities
  • Think both critically and intuitively through the progression of projects to clearly understand the results and identify insights as to how they are important to the big picture in each unique project  

  • Develop high-quality relationships with staff, clients, and modeling software vendors 

  • Support the development of modeling/forecasting skills in other staff  

  • Identify and develop approaches to analyzing complex transportation planning or engineering problems dealing with all travel modes  

  • Apply knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of transportation planning, travel demand forecasting, travel behavior analysis, and data analysis  

  • Maintain afunctional understanding of transportation forecasting software programs, such as Emme,TransCAD, and Visum, and skills to apply these programs on projects 

  • Use statistical and data science software such as Python and R to collate, clean, and analyze large data sets  

  • Use a variety of other software programs to help visualize results for audiences at varying levels of technical complexity  

  • Support papers and presentations for technical conferences  

Qualifications
  • 2+ years of work experience in travel demand modeling and travel behavior forecasting (TransCAD and EMMEstrongly preferred) 

  • Direct experience with regional models is highly desirable (SCAG, SANDAG, OCTA, SBCOG, WRCOG, MAG, OahuMPO) 

  • Master's or bachelor's degree in transportation, civil engineering, or related major  

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, with strong writing, verbal, non-verbal, and presentation skills  

  • Ability to delegate work, track budgets, and meet deadlines   

  • Experience with the development and application of four-step travel demand models, tour-based models, and activity-based models including knowledge of basic statistical concepts and data analysis techniques  

  • Experience with big data for transportation analysis (Replica and StreetLight preferred) 

  • Comfort with working beyond the model: understanding limitations, applying the big picture, and generating innovative ideas  

  • Ability to translate the results of complex analysis to clients in appealing and intuitive ways  

  • Computer and database programming and scripting skills (Python, C++, R, VBA, Access, or similar) and proficiency with GIS 

  • Interest in experimenting with and deploying AI tools to expand the effectiveness, efficiency, and/or creativity of our travel modeling practice 

$90,000 - $130,000 a year
Placement within the stated pay range will be determined based upon education, location, experience, and qualifications.
