Devoted to maintaining and repairing City property, vehicles, roads, equipment through the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor and technical work. Incumbents perform semi-skilled labor requiring technical repairs, operation of light-duty equipment and power tools and/or leading the work of others performing general labor. Incumbents may also assist with general maintenance tasks in addition to their primary assignment. There is an established operational routine to be followed and decisions are limited primarily to choosing how quickly the work is performed and the sequence in which the work is performed to meet established standards and deadlines.

The purpose of this position is to operate basic and specific heavy equipment safely and effectively as necessary to execute city construction, road maintenance, and repair.

*This position receives shift differential pay in addition to base salary for night shift.

*** NOTE: Applicants will be required to complete a field assessment to evaluate their ability to operate a street sweeper, knuckle boom truck and leaf collection truck on the day of their scheduled interview. Successful applicants will participate in a face-to-face interview immediately following their field assessment. ***

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Operating basic and specific heavy equipment limited street sweeper, knuckle boom truck and leaf collection truck.

  • Performing preventive maintenance of equipment and tools by conducting vehicle and equipment pre-trip inspections; cleaning components; monitoring and replenishing fluids; performing basic corrective repairs; may prepare paperwork for major repairs.

  • Submitting neat and complete written and/or electronic records including time sheets, maintenance history report forms, pre and post-trip check forms, and other cost records as needed.

  • Overseeing hauling, loading, unloading, delivery, and installation of project-related materials, tools, and equipment.

  • Providing departmental support by maintaining activity logs and material usage reports and maintaining CDL license for continuing certification and eligibility.

  • Safely performing all work zone traffic control duties including setting up barricades, traffic cones, and signs; flagging traffic for stationary and moving work zones.

  • Performs manual labor tasks on projects including installation, repair, patching, and cleaning using hand and power tools as necessary.

  • Performing technical work, service checks, and preventative maintenance on electronic and other applicable equipment, systems, and vehicles; administering and scheduling repairs; tracking equipment recalls; replacing defective equipment or parts; and operating light-duty equipment, power tools.

  • Maintaining supply inventory; stocking equipment; gathering and compiling information, preparing routine reports; maintaining records and databases; and proofing work for accuracy and completeness.

  • Providing customer service; responding to customer questions and concerns; resolving or escalating issues; and providing information on policies and procedures.

  • Performing other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;

  • Three (3) experience operating equipment such as street sweeper, tandem, axle truck or other equipment which requires a CDL license to operate.

  • A valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record;

  • Must complete job related and/or safety training based on assignment, such as (but not limited to) confined space entry, ladder safety, IMSA signs and markings level II certification, work zone safety, and Flagger training.
