The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Cancer Center (CC) and the Department of Physiology have made a strategic commitment to expand basic science cancer research with a particular focus on cancer metabolism. We invite applications from senior investigators, at the Associate Professor or Professor level, who have well-established research programs in this area. Qualified candidates will be appointed to a leadership role within the MCW Cancer Center as either Associate Director of Basic Sciences or Associate Director Shared Resources (AD of BS or AD of SRs).
The Associate Director of Basic Science will provide scientific leadership to advance and integrate basic science research within the MCW Cancer Center, fostering collaboration across the Cancer Biology, Discovery & Developmental Therapeutics and Cancer Control research programs. As a member of the Cancer Center's leadership team, the AD of BS will serve as key advisor for programmatic grant development focused on innovative preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
The Associate Director of Shared Resources will provide scientific leadership in current and emerging technologies, expertise, and infrastructure that support all Cancer Center research areas, including basic, clinical, and population sciences. As a member of the Cancer Center's senior leadership team, the AD of SRs will develop and implement the strategic vision for Shared Resources. In partnership with other Associate Directors, the AD of BS and AD of SRs will support programmatic research initiatives, faculty mentoring, trainee and staff training, and will help shape recruitment and collaborative priorities to advance interdisciplinary research across the cancer continuum.
Position Highlights:
  • Senior leadership opportunity at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, focused on expanding basic science cancer research with an emphasis on cancer metabolism
  • Open to established investigators at the Associate Professor or Professor level with strong, funded research programs
  • Leadership roles available as Associate Director of Basic Sciences or Associate Director of Shared Resources
  • Drive strategic direction, collaboration, and integration across basic, clinical, and population-based cancer research programs

  • Play an active role in faculty mentoring, recruitment, and training of trainees and staff
  • Contribute to institutional priorities, including growth of research programs and pursuit of NCI designation
  • Access to robust research environment with 250+ scientists and six advanced shared resources

Department/Division Highlights:
Cancer is the top strategic priority at MCW. The MCW CC is an integrated partnership of more than 250 cancer scientists and physicians within three research programs focused on 1) discovering basic biological processes that promote cancer risk, development, and progression (Cancer Biology Research Program), 2) translating promising scientific discoveries into clinical practice (Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Research Program), and 3) facilitating research endeavors that reduce cancer risk, improve outcomes and enhance quality of life, across the cancer care continuum (Cancer Control Research Program). These three programs are supported by 6 Shared Resources (SR): Translational Metabolomics SR; Cell Therapy SR; Structural Biology SR; Geospatial, Epidemiology, and Outcomes SR; Biostatistics SR; and Biorepository and Tissue Analytics SR.

The Cancer Biology Research Program plays a central role in this effort, accelerating discovery in cancer signaling, cancer metabolism, cancer genetics and genomics, precision oncology, cancer immunology, tumor microenvironment, and structural biology. As one of the largest US metro areas without a designated cancer center, NCI designation would have a significant impact on the health and quality of life of the people of Southeastern Wisconsin and beyond. The Cancer Biology Research Program will contribute directly to the Center's strategic initiatives related to NCI designation, including program development, growth of the extramural funding portfolio, and integration across population, clinical and basic science efforts.

These areas include, tumor cell, immune cell, and/or whole organism level metabolism research.
