What is a strategic occupancy planner?

Strategic Occupancy Planners are professionals responsible for optimizing the use of space within an organization’s buildings or facilities. They analyze current and future space needs, develop plans to accommodate growth or changes, and ensure efficient utilization of workspaces. Their role often involves collaborating with real estate, facilities management, and business leaders to align space planning with organizational goals and employee needs. This helps companies reduce costs, improve productivity, and create flexible, adaptable work environments.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a strategic occupancy planner?

To excel as a Strategic Occupancy Planner, you need expertise in space planning, data analysis, and facilities management, often supported by a degree in architecture, interior design, or a related field. Familiarity with space management software (such as AutoCAD, CAFM/IWMS systems), and proficiency in Microsoft Excel are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help you navigate client needs and cross-functional teams effectively. These skills ensure efficient use of workspace, cost savings, and alignment with organizational goals in dynamic environments.
