What does a stormwater engineer do?

A Stormwater Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, and managing systems that control and manage stormwater runoff to prevent flooding, erosion, and water pollution. They analyze rainfall data, design drainage systems, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. These engineers often work on projects related to urban development, infrastructure, and environmental protection, helping communities manage water sustainably and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stormwater engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Stormwater Engineer, a solid background in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, and relevant state licensure (such as a Professional Engineer, PE, license) is essential. Familiarity with stormwater modeling software (like SWMM or HEC-HMS), CAD systems, and GIS tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help engineers collaborate with stakeholders and navigate regulatory requirements. These competencies are crucial to designing effective stormwater systems that protect communities and the environment from flooding and pollution.

What is the difference between Stormwater Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStormwater EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Civil/Environmental Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license often required
Work EnvironmentDesigning stormwater systems, flood control, drainage projectsBroader infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, water supply
Industry UsageSpecializes in stormwater management and environmental complianceWorks across various infrastructure sectors, including stormwater

While both roles require civil engineering credentials and often involve similar work environments, Stormwater Engineers focus specifically on designing and managing stormwater systems, flood control, and drainage solutions. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, covering multiple infrastructure projects. If you're interested in stormwater-specific work, pursuing a career as a Stormwater Engineer offers specialized opportunities within the civil engineering field.

What are some typical projects a stormwater engineer works on, and how do they collaborate with other professionals?

Stormwater Engineers are often involved in designing and implementing systems to manage runoff, prevent flooding, and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Common projects include developing drainage plans for urban developments, rehabilitating aging infrastructure, and conducting watershed assessments. They regularly collaborate with civil engineers, environmental scientists, urban planners, and local government agencies to ensure that stormwater solutions are both effective and sustainable. Effective teamwork and communication are essential, as projects frequently require input from multiple disciplines and stakeholders.

Position Overview
This is a leadership opportunity for a civil engineer who wants more than project delivery-they want influence, team leadership, and a clear path toward long-term ownership. As a Principal Civil Engineer, you will lead complex site development and stormwater infrastructure projects while helping shape the strategic direction of the engineering team. You'll oversee technical execution, mentor junior staff, and drive multidisciplinary coordination across commercial, municipal, industrial, and land development projects.
This role is designed for someone who thrives balancing high-level engineering with client leadership and operational oversight. You'll play a central role in guiding projects from concept through permitting and construction while helping strengthen client relationships and expand project opportunities. The firm values entrepreneurial thinking, collaborative problem-solving, and engineers who want to build both projects and long-term impact.
Core Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and execution of site development projects including grading, drainage, utilities, roadway infrastructure, and stormwater systems
  • Oversee hydrology and hydraulic analysis, stormwater management planning, and implementation of low-impact development strategies
  • Direct multidisciplinary coordination efforts between civil engineering teams, clients, architects, contractors, and regulatory agencies
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, staffing, and overall project delivery to ensure successful outcomes
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, reports, specifications, and construction documents for technical accuracy and code compliance
  • Lead permitting efforts, including agency coordination, permit applications, and responses to review comments
  • Integrate sustainable design principles and stormwater best management practices (BMPs) into project planning and execution
  • Conduct site visits and construction-phase inspections to verify compliance with project specifications and quality standards
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers, designers, and technical staff while supporting long-term team growth
  • Contribute to business development efforts, client relationship management, and strategic project pursuits
  • Support operational leadership initiatives and participate in long-term planning tied to the firm's ownership growth strategy

Required Qualifications

  • Technical Expertise: Strong background in grading, drainage design, stormwater systems, utilities, roadway design, and permitting coordination
  • Software: Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Hydraflow, StormCAD, or similar engineering tools
  • Project Leadership: Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary projects, budgets, schedules, and engineering teams
  • Communication: Strong client-facing communication skills and ability to coordinate effectively with agencies, consultants, and contractors
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of local, state, and federal environmental regulations and development standards

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with large-scale land development or urban planning projects
  • LEED accreditation or sustainability-focused certifications
  • Familiarity with geotechnical, transportation, or related engineering disciplines
  • Strong business development and client relationship management experience
  • Interest in long-term leadership growth and ownership-track opportunities
