Job description

Position Summary:

Lee’s Marketplace is a family-owned grocery chain committed to providing an enjoyable shopping experience for our guests. The Pharmacy Technician supports the pharmacy team by assisting with the preparation, dispensing, and inventory of medications, while providing excellent guest service. This role works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist and ensures that all activities comply with state and federal regulations. The Pharmacy Technician plays a vital role in maintaining workflow efficiency, promoting a clean and organized work environment, and supporting the health and safety of our guests.

Primary Position Duties:

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist pharmacists in filling and labeling prescriptions accurately and efficiently.

  • Input prescription and insurance information into the pharmacy computer system.

  • Prepare and count medication using automated and manual tools, as directed by the pharmacist.

  • Handle third-party insurance billing, rejections, and coordination of benefits.

  • Greet and assist guests at the pharmacy counter, answer phones, and handle requests in a professional and confidential manner.

  • Ensure appropriate product rotation and remove expired or damaged products from shelves.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including counters, shelves, and equipment.

  • Process prescription refills and assist with guest communications regarding medication availability.

  • Support pharmacist-led services, including immunizations and medication therapy management.

  • Follow all HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements.

  • Adhere to state and federal pharmacy laws and company policies and procedures.

  • Any other responsibilities communicated by the Pharmacy Manager, Staff-Pharmacist, Store Director, or Pharmacy Director.

Guest Service:

  • Greet and assist guests in a friendly and courteous manner.

  • Provide knowledgeable answers to guest inquiries. Requests Pharmacist support for instruction or education on sensitive medications and/or procedures. Ensures accuracy in answers with Pharmacist support before relaying to guest.

  • Promote and exemplify a high level of morale within department and store, utilizing friendly but professional methods of honest and open communication with guests and team members.

  • Efficiently handles guest complaints; assists with pharmacy operations to keep wait times to a minimum.

  • Responds to telephone requests from guests, physicians, and vendors.

  • Actively assists with Clinical Programs (Immunizations, MTM, Health Screenings, etc.) and all other company sponsored programs.

  • Understands and communicates correct procedures for billing, filling and dispensing products under CMS DMEPOS guidelines.

  • Displays excellent problems solving skills and prides themselves on finding the best resolution that exemplifies the “Lee’s Way- doing what’s best for our guests, our team, and our company”.

Product Handling:

  • Accurately handle, verify, and dispense prescription medications to guests, ensuring correct drug, dosage, quantity, and labeling.

  • Monitor and manage inventory levels of medications, ensuring appropriate stock rotation (First-In, First-Out), preventing expired stock, and minimizing waste.

  • Ensure all medications are stored under appropriate conditions (temperature, humidity, light protection) according to manufacturer and regulatory guidelines.

  • Safely and securely store, track, and dispense controlled substances in compliance with DEA regulations, including logging, counting, and reporting discrepancies.

  • Coordinate safe and legal disposal of expired, recalled, or damaged medications through reverse distribution channels or hazardous waste programs.

  • Follow strict hygiene and sanitation protocols when handling medications to prevent cross-contamination and ensure product integrity.

  • Identify and remove recalled medications from inventory promptly and follow recall procedures as mandated by regulatory agencies.

Cleanliness and Safety:

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.

  • Follow all safety and sanitation procedures.

  • Report any safety hazards or equipment issues to management.

  • Regularly sanitize work surfaces, counting trays, pill splitters, and other dispensing tools between each prescription to prevent cross-contamination.

  • Ensure frequent handwashing or use of hand sanitizer before and after handling medications or interacting with guests.

  • Wear gloves when handling hazardous medications or during tasks requiring additional protection.

  • Follow proper procedures for compounding (if applicable), including using cleanroom protocols and aseptic techniques when required.

  • Ensure proper disposal of biohazardous waste, sharps, and expired or recalled medications using approved containers and reverse distributors.

  • Keep storage areas, refrigerators, and freezers clean and organized to maintain sanitary conditions and medication integrity.

  • Maintain clear walkways and organized shelving to prevent accidents or contamination from spills or disorganization.

  • Monitor pharmacy temperature and humidity levels daily to ensure medication storage conditions are compliant with regulatory guidelines.

  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed, including masks, goggles, gloves or gowns, especially when handling hazardous or aerosolized drugs.

  • Immediately clean and report any spills of hazardous substances using approved cleanup procedures and kits.

  • Maintain awareness and education on standard operating procedures for sanitation, infection control, and personal hygiene.

  • Follow OSHA, HIPAA, and company-specific safety protocols.

  • Regularly review and follow emergency procedures for fire, chemical exposure, accidental ingestion, or other safety incidents.

Cash Handling (if applicable):

  • Operate cash registers and handle transactions accurately.

  • Follow store policies on returns, exchanges, and refunds.

  • Ensure the security of cash and other financial transactions.

Team Collaboration:

  • Work cooperatively with team members to achieve store goals.

  • Promote a high level of morale within department and store, utilizing friendly but professional methods of honest and open communication.

  • Provides a safe, clean, and positive environment; and consistently builds and supports a culture that is based on relationships and continuous improvement.

  • Continually strives to build knowledge and skills, both personally and within the department.

  • Attends departmental, store, and company meetings/trainings as required.

  • Work in a fast-paced environment with tact and patience.

  • Has knowledge of and complies with all company policies, procedures, programs, and directives. Refers to Team Member Handbook continually to ensure policies and procedures are followed. Promotes a harassment-free environment and immediately reports any potential harmful situation to management.

  • Be a professional role model for all team members to follow.

Education and Experience:

  • Previous pharmacy experience preferred.
