SMUD's IT Infrastructure Platform Services department is hiring for a Storage Infrastructure Engineer for its Compute Platform Engineering team. The team is responsible for architecting, deploying and managing compute & storage infrastructure for enterprise applications.
As member of the Compute Platform Engineering team, the Compute Platform Engineer - Storage Specialist position plays a key role and will help deliver innovative storage solutions to our customers and business partners. This specialist will cover administrative duties such as architecting, provisioning, monitoring, upgrading, and capacity planning for the SMUD's enterprise storage environment, storage area network (SAN), and NAS Infrastructure. The incumbent will also cover additional infrastructure technologies, such as Server Virtualization, x86 Hardware Infrastructure, Server OS Management, Azure, and Containerization.

Purpose
To assist with technical system support and maintenance for SMUD's corporate-level distributed computing infrastructure in the areas of system design, development, installation, operation, maintenance, and support to ensure SMUD's use of technology supports its current and future business practices.
Nature and Scope
There are five (5) levels in this job classification series that have similar job content but with progressively more challenging degrees and levels of skill, responsibility, knowledge, experience and qualification requirements:
Flex Classifications (that permit progression from lower-level classes to higher level classes without examination based upon assessment of an individual's experience and performance) within the series:
  • Entry: Incumbent acquires knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the tasks associated within the series but are not yet demonstrating these at the Journey level.
  • Intermediate: Incumbent continues to acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the tasks associated within the series but are not yet demonstrating these at the Journey level.
  • Journey: Incumbent is demonstrating the required skills and knowledge to independently perform the full scope of the job.

Non-Flex Classifications (that promote from lower-level classes to higher level classes and require an examination, such as an interview, based upon individual experience and performance) within the series:
  • Senior: Advanced journey level resource who is responsible for advanced assignments, as dictated by the work needing to be performed; may serve in a lead capacity.
  • Principal: Subject matter expert/lead level and is responsible for leading the most advanced work, as dictated by the work needing to be performed.

Entry/Intermediate to Journey: Incumbents at the entry (or intermediate) level are required to successfully "progress" to the journey level within 60 months of appointment to remain within the job series.
Seniors and Principals must be hired through a promotional process and do not automatically progress from lower levels in the series.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serves in a support role on multi-departmental networking computer projects with planning, designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining a network infrastructure including backup and recovery, physical and logical network design, network topology, network architecture, security architecture, and corporate server architecture; assisting in identifying and defining corporate level network computing projects; defining functional system requirements and specifications; developing technical standards and procedures; developing the system design; developing system and user acceptance tests; installing and integrating systems; performing post-implementation reviews; and providing technical consultation and solutions for technical issues.
  • Supports assessing the need for new hardware and software systems, upgrades and modifications by evaluating the effectiveness of the current systems; evaluating networking operating system software and related hardware performance and capacity utilizing software and hardware tools; conducting feasibility studies; defining user and system requirements; preparing procurement and bid documents; designing modifications; addressing integration issues; and implementing new software/modifications.
  • Supports the overall effectiveness of using the network infrastructure by developing technical expertise on network systems; providing network consultation; solving a variety of networking design, operational and maintenance problems; troubleshooting user obstacles; and providing 24-hour on call support to departments.
  • Assists in planning, reviewing and conducting work activities and researching required project information associated with department internal/external projects in accordance with established task objectives and schedule as outlined in the project plan/contract.
  • Performs other related duties as needed to include working outside of typical business hours when necessary.

Required Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Experience Qualifications
  • At least one (1+) year experience working in information technology and/or a business environment.

Knowledge Of
Fundamentals of computer programming, hardware and software including Microsoft Office products; basic troubleshooting methods and techniques.
Skills To
Communicate effectively; work as a team member; assimilate into the work environment; learn the requirements of the position.
Desirable Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university majoring in Computer Science, MIS, or related field or equivalent.
  • Experience with Block (SAN) and File (NFS/SMB) storage solutions.
  • Relevant industry certifications such as storage, compute, or cloud certifications.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC), scripting, or automation.
  • Experience working with servers, virtual machines, containers, and storage solutions.
