What is an STNA?

STNAs, or State Tested Nursing Assistants, are healthcare professionals who provide basic nursing care to patients in long-term care facilities, hospitals, and other healthcare settings. They assist patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and mobility. STNAs also help monitor patients' health by taking vital signs and reporting changes to nursing staff. To become an STNA, individuals must complete a state-approved training program and pass a competency exam. STNAs play a crucial role in ensuring the comfort and well-being of patients under their care.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an STNA?

To thrive as an STNA, you need strong knowledge of basic patient care, infection control, and safety practices, typically supported by completion of a state-approved nurse aide training program and successful passage of the STNA certification exam. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), vital signs monitoring equipment, and standard care protocols is often required. Compassion, patience, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for delivering quality care and supporting patients’ emotional and physical well-being. These competencies ensure safe, respectful, and efficient care delivery in healthcare settings, directly impacting patient outcomes and team effectiveness.

What types of shifts and work environments can I expect as an STNA?

As an STNA, you may find opportunities in a variety of healthcare settings, including nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and home health agencies. Shifts can vary widely, with day, evening, night, and weekend hours often available, depending on the employer's needs. Flexibility is valued, as patient care is required around the clock. Many STNAs work as part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating closely with nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide direct care and support to residents or patients.
