The City of Durham is hiring a Temporary Budget & Management Services Graduate Intern! This internship will expose students to both the high-level strategy and the technical experience of a budget office.
Duties/Responsibilities
The City of Durham is hiring a Temporary Budget & Management Services Graduate Intern! This internship will expose students to both the high-level strategy and the technical experience of a budget office. The Durham Budget & Management Services department is unique in its ownership of the strategic plan and performance management, so interns will be able to see how those initiatives impact the organizations while getting hands-on experience producing the annual budget.
Prior interns have assisted with the creation of the final budget document, developed budget in brief files, assisted with the Participatory Budgeting process, assisted with process improvement projects, analyzed historical sales tax data, revised the departmental budget manual and budget request forms, toured operational facilities across the city, etc.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • Must be a current graduate student at an accredited college or university in a Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Public Policy (MPP) program.

Additional Preferred Skills
  • Able to work in internship for at least 10 weeks between June 2026 and August 2026.
  • Must be able to work hybrid schedule with some days in the office.
  • Experience and/or formal training in Local Government budgeting.
  • Experience and/or formal training in quantitative research methods (e.g., basic statistics, etc.).
  • Strong curiosity and ability to ask questions.
  • Critical thinking.
  • Takes initiative and is a creative, results-oriented problem solver.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
