Statistics Consulting information

What is statistics consulting?

Statistics consulting involves providing expert advice and support in the design, analysis, and interpretation of data for research projects, businesses, or organizations. Consultants help clients choose appropriate statistical methods, analyze datasets, and ensure the validity and reliability of their results. They may also assist with study design, data visualization, and communicating statistical findings to non-experts. This service is commonly used in fields like healthcare, social sciences, engineering, and business to make informed decisions based on data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a statistics consultant?

To thrive as a Statistics Consultant, you need a strong background in statistical theory, data analysis, and a relevant degree such as statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Proficiency with statistical software tools like R, SAS, SPSS, or Python, and sometimes certifications in data analytics or advanced statistics, are typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to explain complex findings to non-experts help distinguish top consultants. These skills ensure accurate data-driven insights, effective client communication, and the ability to address diverse analytical challenges.

What are some typical challenges faced in a statistics consulting role and how can I prepare for them?

Statistics consultants often encounter the challenge of translating complex statistical concepts into actionable insights for clients who may have limited technical backgrounds. Additionally, managing multiple projects with tight deadlines and diverse data sources requires strong organizational and communication skills. To prepare, it's helpful to practice explaining statistical methods in simple terms, stay up-to-date with statistical software, and develop efficient project management habits. Building strong relationships with clients and team members also helps ensure smooth collaboration and successful project outcomes.

Job description

Government Consultant – Pharmacy

We are seeking a talented individual to join our Government Human Services Consulting (GHSC) team at Mercer, a Marsh business. This role can be based anywhere near a Mercer office and offers a hybrid work arrangement, requiring a minimum of three days per week in the office.

As a Government Consultant – Pharmacy, you will partner with state governments to analyze financial and pharmacy data, helping clients understand emerging trends in Medicaid, managed care, and fee-for-service delivery. Working alongside licensed pharmacists, pharmacy specialists, credentialed actuaries, and financial specialists, you will develop data-driven insights that help ensure Medicaid resources are used effectively and efficiently. Our team is dedicated to helping government-sponsored healthcare programs become smarter purchasers of health services, bringing together analytical expertise and innovative thinking to solve our clients' most complex challenges.

We will count on you to:

  • Analyze Medicaid pharmacy data and build to support the development of pharmacy efficiencies and other data used in rate development
  • Present analysis to team members, clearly explaining the models used, analysis steps, findings, and adjusting as needed based on feedback
  • Thrive and be motivated by an environment that embraces AI and technology-enabled tools
  • Work with client and team project managers to define project scope, timelines, and deliverables, and help develop key project documents, including budgets and work plans
  • Maintain regular communication with clients and project teams to review project status and expectations, provide expertise and insight to help solve potential issues, and manage project scope, budget, and timelines

What you need to have:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3+ years of healthcare financial analysis experience or pharmacy analysis experience, including financial modeling, or rate development
  • Ability to work on team projects and initiatives in a dynamic environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced MS Excel analytical skills

What makes you stand out?

  • Medicaid program experience
  • SAS (Statistical Analysis System) software experience, including data management, advanced analytics, and modeling
  • PBM experience or knowledge and experience using drug compendia (Medi-Span or First Databank)

Why join our team:

  • We help you be your best through professional development opportunities, interesting work and supportive leaders.
  • We foster a vibrant and inclusive culture where you can work with talented colleagues to create new solutions and have an impact on colleagues, clients, and communities.
  • Our scale enables us to provide a range of career opportunities, as well as benefits and rewards to enhance your well-being.

Marsh is committed to embracing a diverse, inclusive and flexible work environment. We aim to attract and retain the best people and embrace diversity of age background, disability, ethnic origin, family duties, gender orientation or expression, marital status, nationality, parental status, personal or social status, political affiliation, race, religion and beliefs, sex/gender, sexual orientation or expression, skin color, veteran status (including protected veterans), or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. If you have a need that requires accommodation, please let us know by contacting reasonableaccommodations@marsh.com. Marsh is committed to hybrid work, which includes the flexibility of working remotely and the collaboration, connections and professional development benefits of working together in the office. All Marsh colleagues are expected to be in their local office or working onsite with clients at least three days per week. Office-based teams will identify at least one "anchor day" per week on which their full team will be together in person. The applicable base salary range for this role is $68,500 to $137,000.

The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and any applicable minimum wage requirements. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives. We are excited to offer a competitive total rewards package which includes health and welfare benefits, tuition assistance, 401K savings and other retirement programs as well as employee assistance programs.
