What does a Statistical Process Control Engineer do?

A Statistical Process Control (SPC) Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining systems that monitor and control manufacturing processes using statistical methods. They analyze data to identify trends, reduce process variation, and improve product quality. SPC Engineers work closely with production teams to ensure processes remain stable, efficient, and in compliance with industry standards. Their role often involves training staff in SPC techniques and troubleshooting quality issues using data-driven approaches.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Statistical Process Control Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Statistical Process Control Engineer, you need a solid background in statistics, process engineering, and quality management, often supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SPC software (such as Minitab or JMP), Six Sigma methodologies, and quality system certifications like ASQ are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualifications are vital to maintain product quality, optimize processes, and drive continuous improvement within manufacturing or production environments.

What is the difference between Statistical Process Control Engineer vs Quality Engineer?

AspectStatistical Process Control EngineerQuality Engineer
Primary FocusMonitoring and controlling manufacturing processes using statistical methodsEnsuring overall product quality through testing, inspection, and process improvements
CertificationsSix Sigma, Statistical Process Control (SPC) certificationsSix Sigma, Quality Management certifications (e.g., CQE)
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, process development labsQuality departments, production facilities
Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, electronicsManufacturing, healthcare, aerospace

While both roles focus on improving product quality, the Statistical Process Control Engineer specializes in using statistical tools to monitor and control manufacturing processes, whereas the Quality Engineer oversees broader quality assurance activities, including testing and compliance. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

How does a Statistical Process Control Engineer typically collaborate with production and quality teams to drive process improvements?

A Statistical Process Control Engineer regularly works alongside both production and quality assurance teams to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and implement data-driven improvements. They analyze real-time data from manufacturing processes, facilitate root cause analysis sessions, and communicate findings through reports or presentations. Collaboration often includes training team members on SPC tools and methodologies, as well as guiding them in using statistical techniques to monitor and control process variability. This cross-functional teamwork ensures that process adjustments are both technically sound and operationally practical, leading to sustained quality improvements.

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Air Dominance and Strike Division is one of Anduril's fastest growing, most technically complex divisions. We develop and build collaborative combat aircraft, missiles, and the software that powers these autonomous weapons. We are scaling production of a first-of-kind autonomous aircraft at Arsenal 1 in Ohio, and quality is not just a compliance function here. It is a cost lever, a schedule lever, and a credibility lever with the customer.
ABOUT THE JOB
The system that connects incoming quality to defects to root cause to cost impact does not exist at scale yet. You are going to build it. You are not a quality engineer. You are the person who makes quality engineering outcomes measurable, sustainable, and tied to dollars.
Success in this position hinges on three key facets:
  • Cost-of-Poor-Quality (COPQ) ownership - you own the financial narrative of quality. Every defect, every escape, every rework hour has a dollar value and you make that visible, traceable, and actionable.
  • Cross-team accountability - when a defect pattern emerges, you trace it to the source, get the right people solving it, and prove it is fixed in cost and cycle time, not just defect count. Problems die at the root.
  • Technical credibility - you understand manufacturing processes, materials, and failure modes well enough to challenge root cause analysis and know when a corrective action will actually hold.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Build and own the mechanisms that connect incoming quality, in-process defects, root cause, and cost impact into a closed loop that drives decisions
  • Own cost-of-quality trending, closed-loop resolution rate, and continuous improvement velocity measured in cost and cycle time
  • Drive cross-team resolution across quality engineering, production, supply chain, and design when quality issues emerge
  • Own schedule and financial performance of every quality-driven decision on the program
  • Build KPIs that connect operational quality metrics to program-level cost, schedule, and delivery outcomes
  • Drive qualification decisions with cost and schedule data, ensuring quality gates accelerate production rather than bottleneck it
  • Leverage quantitative models (statistical process control, classification, causal analysis, predictive defect modeling) to identify patterns before they become systemic
  • Prepare technical documentation, analysis reports, and briefings for internal teams, customers, and government stakeholders
  • Maintain reproducible analysis pipelines using version control, scripting, and scalable workflows
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years in technical program management, quality engineering, or quality systems roles in complex hardware production environments
  • Demonstrated ability to build quality systems and cost-of-quality frameworks from scratch, not just maintain existing ones
  • Experience driving cross-functional resolution of quality issues spanning engineering, production, and supply chain
  • Technical depth in manufacturing processes sufficient to challenge root cause analysis and validate corrective actions
  • Experience interfacing with government quality oversight (DCMA or equivalent)
  • Comfortable building or interpreting quantitative models to inform quality and cost decisions
  • Familiar with version control, scripting, scalable workflows, and reproducible analysis practices
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Lean Six Sigma certification or equivalent demonstrated application of structured problem solving and statistical methods to quality and process improvement
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, or autonomous systems production environments
  • Proficiency with data tools such as Palantir Foundry, statistical process control software, or custom analytics stacks
  • Background in causal modeling, classification analysis, or predictive quality analytics
  • AS9100 or equivalent aerospace quality management system experience
  • Experience scaling quality systems alongside production ramp from low rate to full rate
