Job description

Location: Butler, PA
Cleveland-Cliffs, Butler Works has an immediate opportunity for a Senior Process Control Engineer - Dev Ops. This role focuses on designing, developing, and supporting backend software systems that interact directly with manufacturing control, reporting, and material tracking systems. This role is fully based on site supporting steel manufacturing operations. The position offers hands-on experience with real-time systems using various automation technologies. The ideal candidate is open-minded, ready to take responsibility, and not afraid of a challenge. They will have the opportunity to help shape the path we take into the technological future.
Summary of Responsibilities
  • Support, develop, and enhance production systems such as Batch and Continuous System Models, Real Time Product Tracking, Real Time Process Variable Tracking and Monitoring, and Front-End Visualization Apps to ensure reliability and minimal downtime.
  • Design, develop, and maintain backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, and SQL-based technologies.
  • Work on a balance of new development and production support responsibilities.
  • Integrate software systems with industrial equipment and control systems, including PLCs, drive systems, and other plant-floor equipment, to support real-time operations.
  • Will collaborate closely with process engineers, controls engineers, and plant operations.
  • Perform root cause analysis, debugging, and performance optimization of applications.
  • Contribute to system enhancements, upgrades, and modernization of legacy applications such as OpenVMS C and Fortran based systems.
  • Responsible for deployment, testing, and documentation of software changes.
  • Participate in a shared, rotating on-call schedule for critical production system support.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5-10 years of experience in software development, industrial automation, or a combination of both.
  • Strong foundation in software engineering principles and object-oriented programming.
  • Experience/Expertise with Java and/or Spring Boot development.
  • Experience/Expertise working with relational databases (SQL).
  • Experience troubleshooting and supporting applications in production environments.
  • Demonstrated ability and drive to learn new technologies and systems.
  • Project Management Experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with backend-focused development and distributed systems.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines or DevOps practices.
  • Experience working in industrial, manufacturing, or plant environments.
  • Experience with Mathematical Modeling.
  • Familiarity with PLCs or industrial control systems is a plus; hands-on exposure will be gained as part of the role.
