State Insurance information

What is a state insurance agent?

State Insurance agents are professionals who help individuals, families, and businesses find and purchase insurance policies provided by state-backed or state-regulated insurance companies. They assess clients' needs, explain available coverage options, and assist with paperwork and claims. Their goal is to ensure clients have the appropriate insurance protection, such as auto, home, or business insurance, while complying with state regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a state insurance agent?

To excel as a State Insurance Agent, you generally need strong knowledge of insurance products, state-specific regulations, and a relevant license to sell insurance in your jurisdiction. Familiarity with insurance management software, customer relationship management (CRM) systems, and digital quoting tools is often required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, active listening, and persuasive communication help build trust and effectively serve clients. These capabilities ensure agents can provide accurate advice, maintain compliance, and drive customer satisfaction in a highly regulated industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in state insurance roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in State Insurance roles often encounter challenges such as managing complex regulatory requirements, adapting to policy changes, and handling high volumes of claims or inquiries during peak periods. Staying updated on relevant state laws and ongoing professional development can help address these challenges. Collaboration with legal teams and regular training enable staff to maintain compliance and provide accurate information to policyholders. Additionally, effective time management and the use of modern claims processing systems can streamline workflows and improve service quality.

Job description

Where will your career take you next? Let's find out together.

At Zurich Cover-More, we're proud to be one of the world's leading travel insurance and assistance providers. Each year, we protect more than 20 million travellers worldwide, making sure we're there every step of their journey with proactive care, personalised cover and specialist support. Zurich Cover-More partners with many of the world's best-known brands - think major airlines, travel giants, top banks, credit card providers, and large retailers - to deliver more care, more cover, for all.

Launched in December 2024, Zurich Cover-More is the global travel brand of Zurich Insurance Group, one of the world's leading multi-line insurers. Our family of customer-facing brands includes trusted names like Travel Guard, Cover-More Travel Insurance, Travelex Insurance, Universal Assistance, World Travel Protection, Freely, and Blue Insurance. Together, we're redefining what it means to travel safely and with confidence. Whether it's a long-awaited holiday, a last-minute business trip, or an unexpected detour, we deliver in the moments that matter.

What you'll be doing:

As the Risk Transformation Lead for North America and Global Partners, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping how risk is embedded across a major integration and transformation journey at Zurich Cover-More. You'll bring strategic insight, independent challenge, and practical leadership to help harmonize risk practices, strengthen governance, and support confident decision-making across the business. This is a highly visible opportunity to influence senior leaders, champion a strong risk culture, and help build a more connected, resilient organisation.

  • Provide independent challenge across complex transformation initiatives by testing assumptions, identifying execution and transition risks, and ensuring material issues are escalated and addressed in a timely manner.
  • Act as a trusted strategic advisor to senior leaders across North America and Global Partners, providing insight on the risk implications of integration decisions related to strategy, operating model design, products, distribution, and go-to-market execution.
  • Lead the harmonisation of risk practices following acquisition and integration activity, conducting gap analysis, setting priorities, and supporting transition plans that improve consistency and efficiency without disrupting customer outcomes or business performance.
  • Provide leadership and direction to risk team members, fostering a culture of accountability, development, and high performance.
  • Establish clear risk expectations during change by defining target-state governance, accountability, decision rights, ownership, and escalation pathways for key stakeholders across Travel Guard and North America.
  • Ensure risk decisions consider customer outcomes and support responsible, compliant business growth.
  • Champion a strong and unified risk culture throughout the transformation journey, reinforcing consistent behaviours, collaboration, and regulatory discipline across Zurich Cover-More.
  • Support the proportionate implementation of Zurich's risk management framework, creating synergies across business units, assurance teams, and global stakeholders while aligning to local regulatory and operational requirements.
What skills and experience you'll bring on this journey:
  • 10+ years of leadership experience, ideally within an insurance carrier, financial services organisation, or another highly regulated environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, Law, or a related discipline; relevant professional qualifications highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience managing risk through complex organisational change, transformation, and/or integration initiatives.
  • Exceptional influencing and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage and challenge executive leaders and cross-functional business partners.
  • Strong knowledge of enterprise risk management and operational risk frameworks, with the ability to apply them pragmatically in a changing business environment.
  • Proven ability to navigate complexity, exercise sound judgment, and provide strategic risk insight that supports commercial and operational decision-making.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to translate complexity into clear actions and recommendations.
  • A proactive, outcomes-focused mindset with the confidence to influence, lead change, and drive continuous improvement.
Why you'll love working with us!

We value optimism, caring, togetherness, reliability, results-orientation, and forward-thinking. ย

We have more than 3000 employees worldwide. We are a global group of digital specialists, actuaries, marketers, doctors, nurses, case managers, claims specialists, finance experts, customer service and corporate services professionals. We share a global purpose to look after travellers, at every step of their journey.ย

Job flexibility. We understand the importance of making sure that work fits into your life, not the other way around. Our hybrid approach ensures you can maintain work-life balance with the flexibility of 3 days in the office and 2 days working from home, after an initial training period.ย

Career growth. This is an extremely exciting time for us at Zurich Cover-More, as we rapidly expand our business across the globe. We're committed to helping our people thrive through a comprehensive onboarding experience, continuous professional development, and a supportive work environment that empowers growth at every stage of your career.

Take the time you need, for you and your community. We encourage you to take the time you need when you need it. We offer regular annual and personal leave benefits along with anniversary leave, volunteer leave and a comprehensive paid parental leave scheme.ย

Investing in your health, and your future. We offer a competitive medical insurance package and pension contributions.

Diversity and inclusion. We respect who you are and thoroughly embrace diversity. Wherever life has taken you, we welcome you to bring your whole self to work. Just be you - because that's exactly who we're looking for.

Apply today and let's go to great places together!
