Job description

Our client is a dynamic real estate development firm managing a diverse and growing portfolio. We're seeking a strategic finance leader to professionalize their accounting function and drive them toward the next phase of growth.

As Controller, you'll own all aspects of financial reporting, compliance, and team leadership for their real estate operations. This is a high-impact position with direct visibility to ownership and a clear path to CFO. You'll inherit a lean accounting function and have full authority to build a best-in-class team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver GAAP-compliant monthly/annual financial statements
  • Build and maintain robust accounting systems, internal controls, and risk frameworks
  • Execute full-cycle accounting: transaction analysis, GL entries, tax schedules
  • Manage bank/investment/tax reconciliations across all accounts
  • Direct cash flow operations and lead efficient month-end closes
  • Oversee AP operations and accounting team supervision
  • Prepare executive/board financial reporting packages
  • Lead audit readiness, working papers, and external audit coordination
  • Handle state registrations, regulatory filings, and compliance obligations
  • Ensure accurate, timely payroll processing for all employees
  • Administer comprehensive benefits programs (medical, dental, life, HRA, 401k)
  • Maintain compliance with payroll, benefits, and employment regulations
  • Partner with vendors for benefit analysis and plan optimization
  • Establish payroll/HRIS/benefits policies and operational procedures

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Accounting/Finance (CPA strongly preferred)
  • 8+ years progressive real estate accounting experience, including development and property management
  • 3+ years people management experience building accounting teams
  • Advanced Excel and ERP experience (Yardi, MRI, Appfolio, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, or similar)
  • Track record delivering clean audits for multi-entity, multi-state operations
