Job description

Duties Description The New York State Senate seeks a qualified candidate to serve as Law Librarian in the NYS Legislative Library. The Legislative Library provides research and information services to members of the New York State Senate, the New York State Assembly, and legislative staff. The Law Librarian supports these functions through the provision of reference, research, and instructional services.

In this dynamic role, you will: Conduct reference interviews to identify user research needs and determine appropriate print and electronic resources. Provide ready reference and in-depth legal and legislative research; refer users to additional resources as appropriate. Assist users in locating and effectively utilizing print and digital collections.

Provide instruction in the use of the library catalog, legal databases, and legal research methodologies. Respond to reference inquiries in person, by phone, and by email. Develop and maintain research guides, pathfinders, and bibliographic tools.

Design instructional materials and conduct orientation sessions for legislative interns and fellows. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications To be considered, you must have: Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school Experience using legal research databases (e.g

Westlaw, Lexis, HeinOnline) Familiarity with the New York State legislative process Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail Demonstrated ability to provide effective customer service The ideal candidate will also have: Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited program Additional Comments This position is Monday through Friday, 35 hours per week, 9.00AM-5.00PM with some unpredictable evening hours during the legislative session (January-June).
