Job description

Duties Description The New York State Assembly Republican Counsel's Office is NOW HIRING and actively seeking applicants to fill the position of Associate Counsel to the Ranking Minority Assemblymember on various Committees. The starting salary is $70,000 annually. The Associate Counsel will work as part of a team on behalf of the Assembly Minority Leader, Assemblymembers, Ranking Minority Members, and relevant central and Member staff.

The dynamic and exciting role of Associate Counsel includes, but is not limited to: preparing Counsel Memo's for assigned Committees; conducting legal and policy research; drafting memoranda, briefing materials, legislation and Sponsor's Memos; tracking committees and legislation active in the Assembly and Senate; making oral presentations regarding legislation under consideration by the Assembly; ascertaining positions of lobbyists, interest groups, and State Agencies and Departments on legislation; and special projects which may be assigned (i.e. research, constituent problems, hearings, etc.). Associate Counsel's are expected to keep abreast of current litigation and publications, articles, other state legislation

Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited law school and must have passed the New York State Bar Exam and be admitted, pending admission or have the ability to waive into the New York State Bar. All candidates are expected to live and work in the Capital Region of New York. Strong writing, research and oratory skills, and the ability to work under pressure are required.

Variable hours as determined by Supervisor based on Legislative Session hours and Legislative Term. $5,000 increase upon bar admission.
