Job description

About the Role: When a family comes to us because their loved one needs nursing home care and they have no idea how to pay for it, you’re the person who guides them through. The Medicaid Specialist manages the full qualification process — from initial eligibility analysis to application submission and annual renewals — so families get the benefits they need, and our attorneys can focus on the legal work. This role matters enormously to clients, often at one of the hardest moments of their lives.

Compensation:

$45,000 - $65,000 yearly

Responsibilities:

What You’ll Do - Interview clients (in person and by phone) to gather financial and medical information and determine Medicaid eligibility for long-term care nursing facility benefits (MEPD) and STAR+PLUS Waiver programs - Counsel families on asset spend-down strategies, Qualified Income Trusts (Miller Trusts), Lady Bird Deeds, and Supplemental Needs Trusts as part of the qualification process - Gather and organize all required documentation; prepare and maintain client files from retention through annual renewal - Prepare and submit initial Medicaid applications and annual renewals to the State of Texas - Track case status and proactively follow up with HHSC and nursing facility business offices - Build and maintain relationships with nursing home business office staff to support referrals and ongoing case communication - Communicate case updates clearly to clients, attorneys, and other team members

Qualifications:

What You Bring - Prior experience as a Medicaid caseworker with HHSC or in a private elder law or Medicaid consulting firm — specifically with nursing home Medicaid (MEPD) and STAR+PLUS Waiver programs - Working knowledge of Medicaid eligibility rules, asset spend-down strategies, Qualified Income Trusts, and related planning tools - Strong organizational skills and attention to detail — you’re managing multiple files with real deadlines and real stakes - Comfortable gathering sensitive financial and medical information from clients who may be scared, overwhelmed, or grieving - Warm, patient, and professional — you know that how you treat people is just as important as what you know

Why Join Us? This is a role where your work directly changes outcomes for families in crisis — and you’ll see that impact every day. You’ll be part of a firm that genuinely cares about its clients and its team, led by an attorney who built the practice around the idea that people deserve to feel respected and taken care of. If you want to do meaningful work in a place where you’re valued, this is it.
