CITY OF ELKHART – JOB DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT: Lerner Theatre
POSITION: Stagehand
DIVISION: Lerner Theatre
STATUS: Part-Time
CATEGORY: Hourly, $14.13
FLSA: Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: Technical Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY
Stagehands perform technical tasks and render services with respect to safe unloading and loading of trucks, equipment set-up and break-down, operation and repair of theatrical lighting, television lighting, sound systems, house fly and rail systems, hoists, scenery, properties, staging, risers, screens, projection equipment, and various duties.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Unload equipment for performances and events from delivery trucks.
  • Load equipment onto delivery trucks after performances and events.
  • Install and set up technical equipment per Technical Coordinator’s direction and equipment specifications for performances and events.
  • Stagehand work during performances as directed.
  • Breakdown technical equipment after performances and events.
  • Operate lighting, sound, and projection systems during performances and events.
PERSONAL WORK TRAITS
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Make repairs to equipment as directed.
  • General cleanup of stage and equipment areas before and after performances and events.
  • Any other duties as requested by the Technical Coordinator.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in stage setup and stage equipment operation.
  • Technical training or education in performing arts technology desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures of theater, dance, music, and other stage productions.
  • Knowledge of electrically and manually operated stage and sound equipment and of the methods, materials, tools, and practices required for their repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of stage settings, lighting, and wiring for sound.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the mechanics of set and property components and set up and break down procedures.
  • Ability to understand lighting and stage plots for a variety of shows.
  • Ability to set up and operate equipment for desired stage and lighting effects.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
  • Visual ability to read stage and light plots and detect subtle shades of color.
  • Hearing ability to use intercom system and decipher audio inputs.
  • Ability to work using all types of lifts and equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work on overhead scaffolding and catwalks.
  • Skills in the use of hand tools essential to the work involved.
  • Ability to carry lighting instruments to top of a ladder.
  • Ability to work extended hours.
  • Ability to work under adverse conditions, such as loud noise, heat, cold, and outdoor weather as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Work is part-time on an as-needed basis for performances and events.
  • Work is performed in a theater and stage environment with some work performed in the Crystal Ballroom.
POST OFFER TESTING REQUIREMENTS
  • The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
  • Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
