Is staff QA engineer still in demand?

Staff QA engineers are still in demand as companies prioritize quality assurance and software testing to ensure reliable products. Experience with automation tools, scripting, and testing frameworks enhances job prospects in this role, which is vital across many industries adopting agile development practices.

How does a Staff QA engineer typically collaborate with development and product teams during the software release cycle?

As a Staff QA Engineer, you play a key role in bridging communication between development, product management, and operations teams. You'll participate in sprint planning, design reviews, and feature discussions to anticipate testing needs early in the development process. Regular collaboration involves providing feedback on testability, creating test strategies, and coordinating automation efforts to ensure quality standards are met before release. This cross-functional approach helps identify potential issues early, streamlines release cycles, and ensures a high-quality product reaches customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Staff QA engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff QA Engineer, you need deep expertise in software testing methodologies, automation frameworks, and a strong understanding of software development life cycles, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, Jenkins, JIRA, and scripting languages like Python or Java is typically required, along with relevant certifications like ISTQB. Exceptional analytical thinking, leadership, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and guide QA teams. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring product quality, driving process improvements, and mentoring others in complex engineering environments.

What is a Staff QA engineer?

Staff QA Engineers are senior-level quality assurance professionals responsible for overseeing the testing processes within a software development team. They design and implement testing strategies, mentor other QA team members, and collaborate closely with developers to ensure software quality throughout the development lifecycle. Staff QA Engineers often lead efforts to automate testing, set best practices, and identify areas for process improvement. Their work helps ensure products meet both technical and user requirements before release.

Job description

About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

The Quality Engineering team at The New York Times is hiring a QA Engineer. You will work with software engineers, DevOps, product managers, and designers to support quality across our web, mobile, and API platforms.

As an embedded Quality Partner, you will collaborate directly with Product Engineering to guide our weekly release schedule without sacrificing excellence. You will influence quality-providing proactive feedback during feature kickoffs, aligning with our offshore QA team to maximize test coverage, and creating test cases and automation scripts to eliminate blind spots.

This role is hybrid and based in New York City, with an expectation of two days per week in the office. You will report to the Senior QA Manager.

We are looking for a QA Engineer-a creative builder who can bridge the gap between QA, DevOps, and engineering excellence. This role is ideal for a mid-level engineer who excels at solving hard problems. The engineer should also automate everything and use modern AI-assisted development tools, such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Claude. These tools accelerate testing and deployment workflows.

At The New York Times Company, building an experienced and diverse workforce is an important part of our mission. We are committed to a hiring process that is inclusive, fair and transparent, and one that puts emphasis on our commitment to career development.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a Quality Partner to the product engineering teams, guiding them on test requirements, testing needs, and uncovering nuanced edge cases.
  • Work with the offshore QA team for testing coverage and support.
  • Assess, fix, and write both manual and automated tests that directly correspond to the features developed by the team you support.
  • Create scalable test environments and tools that accelerate release velocity and improve reliability.
  • Partner with development, DevOps, and product teams to define test strategy and ensure quality from brainstorming through deployment.
  • Apply observability and analytics to quality engineering - integrating logs, metrics, and telemetry to surface product insights.
  • Help evolve best practices for TestOps, automation design, and AI-assisted development.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in test automation, TestOps, or software engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python, with experience writing maintainable automation code and custom test frameworks.
  • Experience with Selenium and Appium, and familiarity with backend testing (REST/gRPC/GraphQL APIs).
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Competence with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and test environment provisioning.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding or automated test generation tools (Cursor, Copilot, or Claude), and writing agentic rules/contexts.
  • The ability to identify gaps and propose sustainable automation solutions.

Additional Compensation and Benefits:
For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
For roles outside of the U.S., information on benefits will be provided during the interview process.
