Position Overview and Responsibilities
The Building Maintenance Technician, under the general supervision of the Managing Director of Buildings & Grounds, performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled building maintenance and repair tasks as well as related duties as required. The technician will perform maintenance and mechanical duties for assigned buildings and related facilities, furnishings, and equipment. Duties may include painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, heating, roofing, and related work. The technician may work independently, under supervision, as a crafts-worker to accomplish specific projects. This is a full time hourly, second shift staff position; work hours are generally 2 to 10:30 pm. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities include:
  • Repairing buildings and structures; building and installing cabinets, partitions, whiteboards, and shelves; repairing furniture and equipment; install floor coverings, acoustical ceilings, and window glass; repair roofs, floors, doors, locks, and related items.
  • Performing basic electrical and plumbing repair such as replacing switches and wiring, repairing faucets, sewers, boiler room equipment, pumps, check valves, boiler lines, heating, and ventilation systems.
  • Painting building interiors and exteriors, furniture, cement, and other materials and items; pouring and finishing concrete.
  • Estimating materials, labor and time needed for projects, operating light automotive equipment to travel to facilities and transporting materials, furniture, and equipment.
  • Completing assigned work orders in a timely and complete fashion.
  • Following safety guidelines when performing all tasks.
  • Partnering to prepare rooms for events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Competencies
The Building Maintenance Technician should have knowledge of the following:
  • Materials, tools, methods, and equipment used in a building trade such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, cement work, and electrical work
  • Repair practices for structures, furnishings, and equipment, and work safety practices

The Building Maintenance Technician should also be able to:
  • Prepare estimates of time, materials, and labor.
  • Work from plans and specifications.
  • Work with limited supervision.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Form and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Provide supervision, training and assistance to others as required.
  • Organize, plan, and prioritize time effectively.
  • Multi-task and change directions easily.
  • Be attentive to detail.
  • Conduct themselves with integrity and dependability.
  • Be a team player with a positive attitude, and exhibit kindness and concern for others.

Requirements
Education and Experience
  • A high school graduate or higher preferred
  • A valid driver's license and MVR required
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in a building trade such as carpentry, painting, masonry, electrical, or a combination of training and education

Physical Requirements:
  • Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
  • Bending, lifting, pushing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, stooping.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment, etc.
  • Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
  • Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
