Description
This is responsible administrative and managerial work involving the management of the Marshal's Division of the Judicial Branch.
Work involves responsibility for organizing, directing, and coordinating the functions within the Marshal's Division, including courtroom assignments and assignments for document service. Work normally involves the exercise of substantial discretion. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Marshal or his designee and is reviewed through personal consultations, observation and results obtained.
Duties and Responsibilities
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed)
  • Coordinates activities of the Division, including scheduling work assignments, deployment of staff, and transmitting orders to deputy marshals for execution.
  • Requisitions equipment and/or services for Division and assumes responsibility for receipt of items.
  • Provides security for Court Clerks and/or Cashiers making bank deposits and for witnesses and other key figures in court cases.
  • Schedules deputy marshals for monthly duty for lockups, security, traffic arraignment, or sentencing court sessions.
  • Administers the electronic monitoring of the house arrest program for defendants.
  • Schedules Division vehicles for service or repair as required.
  • Arranges the commitment and movement of convicted felons to prison.
  • Conducts meetings of deputy marshals to evaluate operations and/or efficiency of squad members as well as individual performance.
  • Coordinates functions and activities of courtroom deputy marshals; assigns marshals for service of documents, reviews service assignments and backlogs; develops work schedules and priorities.
  • Functions as Division Supervisor in the absence of the Assistant Marshal.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school (or its equivalent) and five years experience as a Deputy Marshal III or Courtroom Deputy Marshal l OR seven years as a Deputy Marshall II plus a higher education degree OR twelve to fifteen years experience in law enforcement, including two to three years supervisory experience.

  • Ability to organize, direct and coordinate management activities in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Considerable knowledge of court procedures and scheduling of cases.
  • Knowledge of the security factors associated with public gatherings and high profile trials.
  • Knowledge of clerical and record keeping procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Code and rules relating to court procedure and the media.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology of court work.
  • Knowledge of office procedures and practices.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to learn a variety of judicial procedures and policies.
  • Ability to make quick and accurate decisions in situations demanding security or restoration of decorum.
  • Ability to provide guidance to court personnel in security matters.
  • Skill in the use of a firearm, handcuffs, baton, and two-way radio.
