To thrive as a Sr Software Development Engineer In Test, you need advanced programming skills (such as Java, Python, or C#), deep understanding of software testing methodologies, and a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise with automation frameworks (like Selenium or Cypress), CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Git), and test management systems is typically required, along with certifications such as ISTQB being beneficial. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and strong collaboration and communication skills distinguish standout professionals in this role. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software products through efficient test automation and seamless teamwork.

What are some common challenges faced by a Sr Software Development Engineer in Test when working on large-scale projects?

Sr Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) often encounter challenges such as managing complex test automation frameworks, ensuring comprehensive test coverage for rapidly evolving codebases, and coordinating with multiple development and QA teams. Balancing the need for speed in continuous integration pipelines with maintaining high-quality standards can also be demanding. Additionally, SDETs are frequently responsible for mentoring junior testers and advocating for best testing practices across cross-functional teams, which requires strong communication and leadership skills.

What is a Sr Software Development Engineer In Test (Sr SDET)?

A Sr Software Development Engineer In Test (Sr SDET) is a senior-level professional responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated test frameworks and tools to ensure the quality of software products. They work closely with developers and other QA team members to create robust testing strategies, identify defects, and improve the overall software development process. Sr SDETs have advanced programming skills, deep knowledge of test automation, and often mentor junior team members. Their goal is to enable efficient, reliable, and scalable automated testing throughout the software development lifecycle.

Job description

Senior Software Development Engineer in Test, Middleware

Ready to build what’s next with one of the world’s most iconic brands?

Why Join Subway?

At Subway, we are not standing still. We are building.

This is a business focused on what matters most: growing franchisee profitability, strengthening our brand and creating long-term value. The people who thrive here are the ones who want to make a real impact.

You will not just do the work. You will shape it.

We move fast. We think like owners. We make decisions that matter. We hold ourselves to a high standard because what we do directly impacts thousands of franchisees around the world.

If you bring energy, accountability and a bias for action, you will fit right in.

We take the work seriously, but we also know the best results come from teams that support each other, celebrate wins and show up ready to build something better every day.

This is your chance to be part of what’s next.

About the Role:

Subway’s middleware platform is the integration backbone of our digital commerce stack — connecting front-end applications (iOS, Android, Web, Kiosk) with internal systems and third-party partners like DoorDash and Uber Eats. As the Senior SDET, Middleware, you will lead the design, development, and implementation of automated testing solutions that validate the functionality, performance, accessibility, and reliability of the services built by our Senior Software Engineers.

This is an engineering-first role. You will write production-quality test code, architect scalable test frameworks, and embed automated quality gates directly into our CI/CD pipelines. AI-assisted development is a core part of how our team works — you’ll use tools like GitHub Copilot and Claude daily.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Lead the design and development of automated test frameworks and test suites covering functional, integration, contract, performance, accessibility, and end-to-end scenarios for middleware APIs and services.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, and similar) as a core part of daily engineering work. Champion AI tooling adoption across the team.
  • Own the design and execution of performance and reliability test strategies — including load, stress, spike, and soak testing — to establish service baselines and validate SLA compliance before production release.
  • Partner with Senior Software Engineers and the Senior Quality Engineer throughout the development lifecycle: collaborate on test strategy, review service designs for testability, and integrate automated quality gates into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Validate third-party integrations (DoorDash, Uber Eats, and similar partners) through contract testing, sandbox environment validation, and failure mode analysis.
  • Define and track test coverage and quality metrics across the middleware portfolio; contribute to incident post-mortems with defect analysis and regression findings.

Qualifications (some examples listed below):

  • 5 or more years of experience as an SDET or software engineer with a strong focus on test automation and quality engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect and build automated test frameworks from the ground up for distributed, API-driven systems.
  • Proficiency in one or more of: JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js), Java, or Python for writing production-quality test code.
  • Hands-on experience designing and executing performance, load, and reliability test strategies against backend services.
  • Working knowledge of AWS serverless services (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS).
  • Experience embedding automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, or equivalent).
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals — able to write clean, maintainable, reviewable test code.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • People Management: No | Department: Digital & Consumer Technology / Middleware | Location: Shelton, CT (USA) | Scope: Global | Travel: Less than 10%.

What do we offer?

  • Insurance Plans (Medical, Life)
  • Pension/401K/RSP (country specific)
  • Competitive Bonus
  • Mobility Allowance
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Company Holidays
  • Volunteering time
  • And More……

Compensation: The base pay range for this role is $119,200 - $149,000 annually

Pay within this range will be determined in good faith based on job-related factors, which may include skills, experience, education/training, location, and internal equity
