What is a Sr Project Engineer?

Senior Project Engineers are experienced professionals who lead and manage engineering projects from conception to completion. They coordinate project teams, oversee design and technical aspects, ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget, and maintain communication with stakeholders. Their role often includes problem-solving, risk management, and making critical decisions to ensure project success. Senior Project Engineers typically have several years of experience and advanced knowledge in their engineering discipline.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Project Engineer?

To thrive as a Sr Project Engineer, you need advanced engineering knowledge, project management expertise, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and industry standards is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage teams and stakeholders effectively. These capabilities ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to required quality standards.

Job description

Title: Project Engineer
Location: Asheville, OH
Division: Enerfab Power & Industrial
Reports To: Director of Operations
Salary Range: $140,000 to $180,000
Company Summary
Enerfab has over 120 years of experience, offering fabrication and construction capabilities to a wide variety of customers in the chemical, food & beverage, oil & gas, heavy industrial, and power industries. Founded in 1901, our company began making sealants and lacquers — including a patented formula for brewer’s pitch — for beer tanks and vessels. Over the last century, our expanded capabilities, project experience, safety record, and commitment to quality have made Enerfab one of the industry leaders in shop fabrication, field erection, construction, and maintenance services.
The Project Engineer will play a vital role as the key support to the Senior Project Manager on large-scale, complex construction projects. This individual will collaborate closely with project management and estimating teams, bridging the gap between project execution and accurate cost forecasting. The Project Engineer will assist in project planning, budgeting, vendor coordination, and scheduling to ensure seamless project delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Estimating & Budget Support
    • Collaborate with the Estimating department to prepare detailed project estimates, budgets, and cost analyses.
    • Continuously monitor project costs and expenditures, providing real-time feedback to the Senior Project Manager.
    • Support the development and maintenance of cost control systems to track and manage variances.
  2. Project Coordination & Planning
    • Assist the Senior Project Manager in developing project strategies, including scope, objectives, timelines, and budgets.
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Procurement, Fabrication, Field Operations) to gather input and align project goals.
    • Support subcontractor selection and coordination, ensuring alignment with project specifications.
  3. Scheduling & Timeline Management
    • Help develop and maintain detailed project schedules using industry-standard scheduling software.
    • Monitor project milestones, proactively identify schedule risks, and recommend mitigation actions to the Senior Project Manager.
    • Ensure timely updates of project deliverables to all relevant stakeholders.
  4. Quality Assurance & Compliance
    • Work with Quality Control teams to ensure project activities meet industry standards and client requirements.
    • Assist in documenting and resolving any quality-related issues.
    • Verify that construction practices comply with safety regulations and company policies.
  5. Risk Identification & Mitigation
    • Support the Senior Project Manager in identifying and assessing project risks (technical, financial, and schedule).
    • Participate in developing and maintaining risk mitigation plans, tracking ongoing risk factors, and suggesting corrective actions.
    • Aid in addressing change orders, scope modifications, and unforeseen challenges.
  6. Client & Stakeholder Relations
    • Coordinate with clients and other external stakeholders under the guidance of the Senior Project Manager, ensuring clear and consistent communication.
    • Provide regular project status updates and gather feedback to maintain positive working relationships.
    • Assist with client inquiries, issues, and change requests in collaboration with the Senior Project Manager.
  7. Project Reporting & Documentation
    • Assist in preparing and distributing project status reports, cost-tracking documents, and performance metrics.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date project records, including meeting minutes and action items.
    • Contribute to project presentations, ensuring data is current and effectively communicated.
  8. Contract Administration
    • Support the Senior Project Manager in reviewing and managing project contracts.
    • Track compliance with contract terms and conditions, coordinating with legal and internal teams when needed.
    • Identify and escalate potential contractual disputes or variations promptly.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in estimating, project coordination, or construction management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in project management software, scheduling tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical skills with proven ability to interpret and manage budgets, estimates, and cost reports.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of construction industry practices, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Ability to travel to project sites as required.
