How does a Sr Project Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

As a Sr Project Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with cross-functional teams such as design, procurement, quality assurance, and operations. This role often serves as a bridge between technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring that project requirements are clearly communicated and understood. You’ll participate in coordination meetings, resolve technical challenges, and facilitate progress by aligning team efforts with project goals and timelines. Effective communication and leadership are crucial, as you may also mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle.

What is a SR project engineer?

A senior project engineer is a professional responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing engineering projects from inception to completion. They typically have extensive technical knowledge, project management skills, and may use tools like AutoCAD or MS Project, often requiring relevant certifications and experience in the specific engineering field.

What are Sr Project Engineers?

Senior Project Engineers are experienced professionals who lead and manage engineering projects from conception to completion. They coordinate project teams, oversee design and technical aspects, ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget, and maintain communication with stakeholders. Their role often includes problem-solving, risk management, and making critical decisions to ensure project success. Senior Project Engineers typically have several years of experience and advanced knowledge in their engineering discipline.

What engineers make $200,000 a year?

Senior project engineers in industries such as oil and gas, aerospace, or construction can earn $200,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, specialized skills, and certifications like PMP. High salaries are often associated with managerial responsibilities, complex projects, or working in high-demand sectors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sr Project Engineer, you need advanced engineering knowledge, project management expertise, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with project management software (such as MS Project or Primavera), CAD tools, and industry standards is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage teams and stakeholders effectively. These capabilities ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to required quality standards.

Join a growing Utility Infrastructure team delivering impactful water, wastewater, and stormwater projects that directly support public health and sustainable communities. This role is designed for engineers at varying experience levels, from developing professionals building technical depth to seasoned engineers leading complex design efforts.

You will contribute to projects from concept through construction, collaborating with Project Managers and senior technical staff while gaining increasing ownership based on your experience level.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects, including distribution systems, pumping stations, treatment facilities, green infrastructure, and utility relocations

  • Prepare and review design drawings, specifications, calculations, permitting documents, and construction exhibits

  • Perform engineering calculations, technical evaluations, and product research (increasing in complexity with experience)

  • Interpret and apply regulatory requirements to ensure compliant, constructible designs

  • Identify design challenges and develop practical, efficient, and innovative solutions

  • Collaborate with Project Managers on technical execution, planning, and problem-solving

  • Support construction administration through RFIs, submittals, site visits, and field reports

  • Coordinate with internal teams, clients, and external partners for seamless project delivery

  • Contribute to quality assurance through review of engineering documents and deliverables

  • Mentor and support junior staff (senior-level expectation; developing skill at PE level)

  • Serve as technical representative of firm at all required project meetings, presentations, and public hearings

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering or related field

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required

  • Experience range:

    • Project Engineer: ~4+ years of relevant experience

    • Senior Project Engineer: 10+ years of diversified experience

  • Background in water, wastewater, stormwater, and municipal or public utility projects

  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and infrastructure best practices

  • Proven ability to handle increasing technical complexity and project responsibility with experience

  • Active involvement or interest in professional organizations (e.g., WEF, AWWA, ASCE)

  • Travel: Occasional day trips to project sites and client meetings

  • Field Work: Occasional site assessment, field measurements, construction observation

Why You’ll Love This Role

Purpose-driven work: Design infrastructure that directly improves public health, sustainability, and quality of life

  • Growth and mentorship: Learn from senior engineers while building leadership and technical expertise

  • Ownership and impact: Take real responsibility for projects, not just pieces of them

  • Collaborative culture: Work with cross-functional teams that value communication and shared success

  • Variety and challenge: No two projects are the same, keeping your work engaging and meaningful

  • Career momentum: Clear opportunities to advance technically and professionally

Compensation Range: $70K - $130K
