Sr Frontend Engineer information

What is a Sr Frontend engineer?

Sr Frontend Engineers are experienced software developers who specialize in building and optimizing the user-facing parts of web applications. They lead the design and implementation of complex interfaces, ensure performance and accessibility, and often mentor junior engineers. Their role includes working closely with designers, backend developers, and product managers to deliver high-quality, scalable front-end solutions. Typically, they have a deep understanding of modern JavaScript frameworks, web standards, and best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sr Frontend engineer?

To thrive as a Sr Frontend Engineer, you need advanced expertise in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern frontend frameworks like React or Angular, typically supported by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), build tools (Webpack, Babel), and testing frameworks (Jest, Cypress) is standard, and certifications in relevant technologies are a plus. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and mentor junior developers. These technical and interpersonal skills are crucial for delivering robust, maintainable user interfaces that drive business outcomes.

How does a Sr Frontend engineer typically collaborate with backend teams to deliver high-quality user experiences?

As a Sr Frontend Engineer, you’ll frequently work closely with backend developers to define APIs, discuss data requirements, and troubleshoot integration issues. Regular collaboration involves participating in planning meetings, code reviews, and joint debugging sessions to ensure frontend and backend components align seamlessly. This cross-team communication is essential for delivering responsive, efficient, and scalable user interfaces, and it also provides opportunities to influence architectural decisions and improve overall product quality.

About Your Team:

Join our UI brokerage Web Application Engineering team! We build application UIs with web technology that ship inside IBKR's native trading platforms. The majority of our work is embedded directly into the desktop and mobile clients, where it runs seamlessly as part of the native experience, alongside our client-facing web application. We work in a micro frontend architecture built on Vue 3 and TypeScript, which lets us ship independently deployable apps across multiple host platforms. We use AI-assisted and agentic development heavily and are actively building it into our standard engineering practice, with coding agents and AI tooling as part of the team's daily work.

What will be your responsibilities within IBKR:
  • Design and build scalable web applications within the VueJs ecosystem (VueJs, Vuex, Pinia, Vite, Cypress, webpack)
  • Owning and building high-traffic applications with a focus on speed and user experience.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and peers to ideate, plan, and organize large-scale projects.
  • Contribute and help maintain our company-wide Vue UI Component Library
  • Set direction and partner with other frontend engineers to implement new technologies
  • Work with a team of intelligent, intense and fast-moving co-workers.
Which skills are required:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related area
  • 5+ years of commercial software development experience with an emphasis on single-page web app development
  • AI/Agentic Development — must be fluent with Claude Code or similar agentic dev tools; applied AI experience (agents, MCP, AI features in production) is a strong plus
  • Maintain high code quality standards, functional specification documentation, and deliverables.
  • Experience integrating 1st and 3rd party APIs
  • Experience working with webpack and Vite
  • A proactive and enthusiastic attitude and technical orientation are required.
  • The ability to pay attention to detail
