What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Sr Dispatcher?

To thrive as a Sr Dispatcher, you need strong organizational skills, multitasking ability, and in-depth knowledge of dispatch procedures, often backed by experience in logistics or transportation. Familiarity with dispatch software, GPS tracking systems, and sometimes certifications like Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) or relevant transportation credentials are typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help Sr Dispatchers excel in coordinating fast-paced operations. These skills ensure efficient resource allocation, quick response times, and effective team coordination, which are critical for operational success and safety.

What is a Sr Dispatcher?

Sr Dispatchers, or Senior Dispatchers, are experienced professionals responsible for coordinating and overseeing the daily operations of dispatch teams in industries such as transportation, emergency services, or logistics. They manage schedules, monitor workloads, communicate with drivers or field staff, and resolve any issues that arise during operations. Sr Dispatchers often train new dispatchers, ensure compliance with company policies, and use dispatch software to optimize routes and response times. Their role is crucial for maintaining efficient and effective communication and service delivery.

What are some of the main challenges Sr Dispatchers face when coordinating logistics across multiple teams?

Sr Dispatchers often juggle real-time communication between drivers, customers, and internal teams, which can be challenging during peak times or when unexpected issues arise. They must quickly adapt to last-minute changes, such as traffic delays or equipment breakdowns, and efficiently re-route resources without disrupting service quality. Strong problem-solving and multitasking skills are essential to maintain smooth operations and ensure all parties are informed and aligned.

The company builds and uses proprietary technology to deliver zero-emissions carrier services to Fortune 500 shippers with superior economics and service to legacy diesel operators. The company has operations in California and Texas, and is backed by globally-renowned investors including Lowercarbon Capital.
About The Role:
Nevoya is seeking a skilled Dispatcher to coordinate loads, manage schedules, and support operational efficiency across our electric trucking fleet. In this role you will be managing real-time freight operations while resolving the majority of issues independently and escalating only when necessary. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment, communicates effectively with drivers, brokers, and vendors, and can quickly adapt to policy and process changes. Dispatchers at Nevoya are problem-solvers who ensure shipments move on time, compliance is maintained, and customers receive excellent service.
Shift:

This role is hybrid in Perris, CA.
What You'll Do:
  • Assign and coordinate loads to drivers, ensuring on-time pickup and delivery
  • Communicate with drivers to manage schedules, provide route updates, and troubleshoot issues
  • Liaise with brokers and vendors to ensure smooth shipment flow
  • Maintain accurate and timely updates in our dispatch systems
  • Monitor and ensure Hours of Service compliance for all assigned drivers
  • Manage EV charge planning to prevent delays in delivery schedules
  • Reprioritize workloads in real time based on emergent events, guided by established policies
  • Support other dispatchers with task delegation and provide operational guidance
  • Coordinate with Senior Dispatchers on escalated issues or operational improvements
  • Track and report on KPIs including on-time rates, empty miles percentage, and compliance scores

Success in this role will be measured against the following operational targets:
  • On-Time Pickup & Delivery Rate: 90% or higher
  • Load Assignment Turnaround: 30 minutes or less from load availability
  • Driver Communication Response Time: 5 minutes or less
  • Hours of Service (HOS) Compliance: 98% or higher
  • Empty Miles Percentage: 15% or lower
  • TMS Software Update Accuracy: 95% or higher
  • EV Charge Management: 95% or more trips without charging delays

Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of logistics experience, preferably in a dispatch or customer service capacity
  • Intermediate IT proficiency and comfort with logistics technology platforms
  • Working knowledge of freight industry standards and processes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Proven ability to unjam operational issues and resolve problems independently in real time
  • Adaptability to process and policy changes in a fast-moving environment
  • College degree preferred

Preferred:
  • Prior EV fleet or sustainable transportation dispatch experience
  • Familiarity with dispatch/tracking platforms
  • Experience coordinating across multiple time zones
