Job description

Position Summary:
  • This procedure describes the basic functions, reporting relationships, authority, and responsibilities of the Sr. Design Engineer at S amp;P USA.
  • The Job Description provides the performance criteria for the position. It also states the Job Requirements as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • The person occupying the position of Sr. Design Engineer is responsible for leading product development projects from concept through to production. The Sr. Design Engineer will use SolidWorks to create accurate parts, drawings, and assemblies of new product designs and existing product redesigns. The engineer will be responsible for analyzing and thinking through new product ideas. Finally, the Sr. Design Engineer will use strong verbal and written communication skills to work among a team of manufacturing, regulatory, and design engineers to complete projects within given timeframes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The primary duty of the Sr. Design Engineer will be to develop detailed drawings, parts, models, and specifications for HVAC fan products using SolidWorks. These designs will be created through analyzing various complicated and technical data.
  • Assist with prototyping of new designs.
  • Support shop floor by making design changes through an ECR/ECN process.
  • Update MRP systems to support new product design projects and redesigns, this will include creating new BOMs, updating BOMs, and etc.
  • Perform FEA, FMEA, and CFD studies on ventilation fan parts and assemblies.
  • Support special order quote requests when needed.
  • Support the Support Services department with technical support for complicated customer issues.
  • Layout, draw, and reproduce illustrations for reference manuals and technical publications to describe operation of mechanical systems.
  • Answer queries from Sales, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Support Services as required.
  • Work with Manufacturing to determine costs of existing designs and new product designs.
  • Become very adept at using industry calculation methods for air, sound, and motor equations. Use those calculations to assist with updating company software and to improve processes within the Engineering department.
  • Support the Manufacturing Engineering department when necessary. This could include working on equipment, developing tooling, and etc.
  • Assist the Engineering Manager with mentoring and helping other Engineers or Technicians as needed. This will include assisting them when the Engineering Manager is not immediately reachable.
  • May require occasional travel as needed.
  • Observe all company policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work additional hours to support the organization’s needs.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Engineering Manager.
Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or similar) and at least 10 years of design experience.
  • Proficiency in the Windows environment, such as Word, Excel, Outlook, SolidWorks, and AutoCAD required.
  • Proficiency in using MPR II systems required.
  • Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to comprehend complex technical topics and specialized information, and think in terms of abstract ideas.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to read and interpret English documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Mental Requirements:
  • Ability to communicate in English (read, write and speak) is required as the overwhelming majority of customers, vendors, co-workers, and suppliers communicate in this language.
  • Reasoning ability is required to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Mathematical abilities to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume and to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Requires knowledge of sheet metal design.
  • Knowledge of designing for manufacturability. This includes common knowledge of common manufacturing equipment and the ability to troubleshoot and work on machinery when required.
  • Proven experience in designing dynamic products is required (not just static).
  • Previous work of troubleshooting problems on the manufacturing or shop floor highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in working with Purchasing to ID component suppliers (especially motors) is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in designing automated manufacturing equipment is desirable.
  • The ability to serve as a mentor to other Engineers and Technicians, and to answer immediate concerns of them if required.

  • The physical demands of the position are listed in accordance with the requirements of the ADA as:

Hearing – the ability to communicate effectively.

  • The ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as eye protection, back protection, ear protection, etc. as necessary or required.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
Environmental Conditions:
The environmental conditions of the area in which the person shall perform his/her duties consist of ambient temperature variations, dust, fumes, and elevated noise levels found in a manufacturing environment in this geographical area.
