What is sports turf management?

Sports turf management is the practice of maintaining and preparing natural or synthetic grass surfaces for athletic fields, stadiums, and recreational sports venues. Professionals in this field are responsible for ensuring safe, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing playing surfaces by performing tasks such as mowing, fertilization, irrigation, pest control, and repair of worn areas. They often use specialized equipment and techniques to maximize turf performance and minimize downtime due to weather or heavy use. Sports turf managers may work for schools, professional sports teams, municipalities, or private facilities.

What are some common challenges faced in a sports turf management role, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in sports turf management often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, heavy usage of playing surfaces, and the need to maintain optimal turf quality year-round. Addressing these challenges requires proactive planning, including regular soil testing, implementing proper irrigation and drainage solutions, and scheduling maintenance around team activities. Collaboration with coaches, grounds staff, and facility managers is essential to coordinate field availability and ensure that playing surfaces meet safety and performance standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in sports turf management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Sports Turf Management, you need expertise in agronomy, turfgrass science, and grounds maintenance, typically supported by a degree in turf management or a related field. Familiarity with irrigation systems, soil testing equipment, and industry-standard certifications like Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top professionals apart in this role. These competencies ensure safe, high-quality playing surfaces and efficient operations, which are critical for athlete safety and facility reputation.

Job description

The Simplot Company is a diverse, privately held global food and agriculture company headquartered in Boise, Idaho. We are a true farm-to-table company with an integrated portfolio including food processing and food brands, phosphate mining, fertilizer manufacturing, farming, ranching and cattle production, and other enterprises related to agriculture.

Summary

Help Shape the Future of Turf & Horticulture in Michiganย
Michigan is a key growth market for Simplot Turf & Horticulture, and we're looking for relationship-driven professionals who want to help build what's next. This isn't a role built around maintaining the status quo. It's an opportunity to join a respected industry leader, establish new partnerships, grow our presence across the state, and make a visible impact on the future of our business.ย
Whether you're currently working as a Golf Course Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Sports Turf Manager, Turf Equipment Sales Representative, Agronomist, Landscape Account Manager, Landscape Operations Leader, or another green industry professional, this role offers the opportunity to leverage your industry expertise, expand your impact, and take your career to the next level.ย
At Simplot, you'll have the autonomy to manage your territory, the support of experienced leaders, and the chance to help shape our long-term success in Michigan. If you're passionate about the industry, enjoy building relationships, and are excited by the opportunity to create something meaningful, we'd love to meet you.ย
This is an opportunity to help build Simplot's future in Michigan, not simply step into an existing territory.ย

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and strengthen relationships with golf courses, lawn care operators, landscapers, municipalities, sports turf managers, and other turf and horticulture customers.ย
  • Serve as a trusted advisor by providing recommendations, technical expertise, and industry insight.ย
  • Manage existing accounts while actively developing new business opportunities across Michigan.ย
  • Spend the majority of your time in the field meeting customers, visiting properties, and growing relationships.ย
  • Collaborate with Operations and internal teams to ensure exceptional customer experiences.ย
  • Help establish Simplot as a preferred partner in a competitive market.ย
Relevant Experience

We're intentionally open-minded about background and years of experience. Previous sales experience is helpful, but industry knowledge and relationship-building ability are often more important. We can teach products and processes. We value people who understand our customers, can speak their language, and can build trust. Candidates may come from golf course operations, turfgrass management, lawn care, landscaping, equipment sales, agronomy, horticulture, sports turf, nursery operations, or other green industry backgrounds.ย

Why This Opportunity Is Differentย

Help grow Simplot's presence in an exciting and expanding market.ย
Build your own success while supported by an established industry leader.ย
Work with customers you already understand and care about.ย
Leverage your industry knowledge instead of starting over in a new field.ย
Join a collaborative culture where relationships matter.ย
Receive hands-on mentorship and field training from experienced Turf Advisors and industry veterans.ย
Make a visible impact on business growth across Michigan.ย

Why Join Our Team?ย

This is an exciting time to join Simplot Turf & Horticulture. We're investing in Michigan, expanding our presence, and creating opportunities for talented professionals to help drive that growth. You'll join a team that combines the strength and resources of a respected industry leader with the entrepreneurial spirit of a growing business.ย
New Turf Advisors receive hands-on onboarding, ride-alongs, mentorship, and field training from experienced leaders and successful advisors. Rather than learning from a desk, you'll spend time in the field building relationships, learning the business, and gaining firsthand experience.ย
Most importantly, you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. The work you do, the relationships you build, and the business you develop will be visible and valued.ย

Success in This Roleย

Successful Turf Advisors become trusted resources within the industry. They develop lasting customer relationships, identify opportunities for growth, collaborate effectively with teammates, and help establish Simplot as a preferred partner throughout Michigan. Within the first year, success means opening new accounts, creating momentum in the market, and helping expand Simplot's footprint across the state.ย

Other Informationย

This position is advertised statewide as Simplot continues to grow throughout Michigan, with opportunities supporting multiple regions across the state. Relocation assistance is not available.ย
