Job description

Location: Rochester, NY
Title: Recreational Specialist (HELP Program)
Deadline: August 28, 2026 5:00pm
Salary: $48,010 - $63,587 annually

Description of Duties
This is a professional position located at that Monroe County Department of Human Services - Children's Detention Center, a 24/7 facility and is responsible for conducting and overseeing recreational activities for the educational program, as well as the oversight of the after-school programs. This position supervises youth aged twelve (12) years through, and including, eighteen (18) years under the direction of the Recreation and Vocational Coordinator. The employee reports directly to, and works under, the general supervision of the Recreation and Vocational Coordinator or other higher-level staff member. Does related work as required.
HELP PROGRAM : Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Program. This program streamlines the appointment process to allow Monroe County to hire diverse, qualified permanent employees quickly and without examinations.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus, EITHER:
  1. Graduation with an Associate's degree or 60 college semester credit hours in Social Work, Sociology, or Criminal Justice, or in a human services, human relations, human and/or child development, child and/or family studies, social and cultural diversity, education, therapeutic recreation, sports administration, sports management, or leisure and/or sports, parks or recreation field; OR,
  1. Two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience in planning, organizing and conducting activities of a recreation program, physical education or sports program (school or other), or therapeutic recreation program; OR,
  1. An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
