What is the difference between Sports Card Grading vs Sports Card Authentication?

AspectSports Card GradingSports Card Authentication
CredentialsCertification in grading standards, often from professional organizationsCertification in authentication processes, sometimes from similar bodies
Work EnvironmentLaboratory or grading facility, handling cards for quality assessmentAuthentication centers, verifying the legitimacy of cards
Industry UsageUsed to determine card condition and valueUsed to verify authenticity and prevent fraud

Sports Card Grading focuses on assessing the condition and quality of a card, while Sports Card Authentication verifies the card's legitimacy. Both roles are essential in the sports collectibles industry but serve different purposes: grading evaluates quality, authentication confirms authenticity.

What is sports card grading?

Sports card grading is the process of evaluating the condition and authenticity of sports trading cards by a professional grading company. The card is carefully inspected for factors like centering, corners, edges, and surface quality, and then assigned a grade, usually on a scale from 1 to 10. Graded cards are encapsulated in protective holders and often have higher market value due to their verified condition. This process helps collectors and sellers accurately determine a card’s worth and authenticity.
