Software Engineer

As a Software Engineer at JPMorgan Chase within the Commercial & Investment Bank, API Platform team, you will support the development, automation, and maintenance of our API management platform. Leveraging technologies such as Apigee, Kong, Envoy, Akamai, and edge server solutions, you will help enable secure, scalable, and high-performance APIs that power our products and services. This role offers an excellent opportunity for engineers with a solid technical background to gain hands-on experience with modern API platforms and cloud-native architectures, while collaborating with experienced professionals to address real-world challenges.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain robust API gateway and management solutions utilizing platforms such as Apigee, Kong, Envoy, Akamai, and edge server technologies.
  • Implement and enforce API security standards, including authentication and authorization mechanisms such as OAuth, LDAP, SAML, and Kerberos.
  • Engineer advanced API traffic management strategies, including rate limiting, throttling, and quota enforcement to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Integrate comprehensive logging, monitoring, and observability practices using tools such as Splunk, Grafana, and Datadog to ensure visibility and rapid incident response.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver effective solutions for the API developer community.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving code quality and reliability.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders to support project objectives.
  • Develop secure, high-quality production code in adherence to best practices and standards.
  • Support platform automation initiatives and cloud-native solution implementations.
  • Engage with the engineering community to learn and apply industry frameworks, tools, and software development life cycle practices.
  • Promote a team culture of diversity, opportunity, and respect.

Required Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills:

  • Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 3+ years applied experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience in application development, testing, and operational support.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and managing API Gateway solutions—including but not limited to Apigee, Kong, and Envoy—with a strong background in microservice architecture and modern API technologies.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, with demonstrated knowledge of site reliability engineering (SRE) practices and incident management processes to provide rapid solutions for internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to approach problems with an architectural mindset, considering scalability, reliability, and best practices in solution design.
  • Exposure to relational and NoSQL databases, as well as cloud-native, Agile, DevOps, and test-driven development (TDD) methodologies.
  • Capacity to learn and apply new technical concepts independently.

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities, and Skills:

  • Understanding of networking and connectivity, including diagnosing network latencies, DNS, cloud connectivity, edge server operations, and content delivery networks such as Akamai.
  • Knowledge of API security, including transport-level security, payload encryption, certificate management, OAuth, and DDoS protection.
  • Emphasized core gateway functions: security, traffic management, and API lifecycle.
  • Experience or interest in monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk, Grafana, and Datadog.
  • Exposure to designing scalable and resilient systems on public cloud platforms (e.g., AWS).
