Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collection using venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Complete pediatric blood collections safely and accurately in a hospital setting.
  • Manage difficult draws, including patients in medical office buildings and high-acuity inpatient units.
  • Process and label specimens in accordance with hospital and laboratory protocols to ensure accuracy and traceability.
  • Work in inpatient environments such as ICU and other high-volume units, maintaining efficiency and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations related to phlebotomy and specimen handling.
  • Communicate the importance of compliance and safety effectively to colleagues and other staff members.

  • Rotate between multiple hospital locations on a weekly basis, adapting to different workflows and teams.
  • Maintain professional appearance and adherence to dress code while working in clinical and hospital environments.
  • Follow union and scheduling guidelines, including potential split shifts or occasional cancellations while maintaining minimum weekly hours after training.
  • Participate in a structured training program on 1st shift to learn site-specific procedures and expectations.
  • Support a collaborative and patient-centered culture by providing courteous, efficient, and compassionate service.
Essential Skills

  • Experience handling difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings.
  • Strong understanding of compliance and safety standards related to phlebotomy and specimen processing.
  • Ability to clearly communicate compliance and safety requirements to other employees.
  • Capability to provide orientation and training to patient service staff.
  • Willingness to work per diem/on-call and be available for same-day calls and shifts.
  • Flexibility to work 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, including evenings and nights.
  • Comfort working weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Reliability in maintaining a minimum of approximately 30 hours per week after the training period, despite variable scheduling.
  • Ability to travel between multiple hospital locations within the region.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Outpatient phlebotomy experience, especially 3+ years in a high-volume setting, is highly valued and may be considered for rotating inpatient assignments.
  • Comfort working primarily evening (PM) shifts, with the ability to cover AM and NOC shifts when required.
  • Ability to work a weekend-focused schedule (Friday through Monday) if needed.

  • Organizational skills to manage rotating locations and variable schedules effectively.
Work Environment

This role is based across multiple hospital and medical facilities in the Moreno Valley, Murrieta, and Riverside region. The position primarily covers evening (PM) shifts but requires flexibility to work AM and NOC shifts as needed. You will rotate weekly among key locations, typically working one week in Murrieta, one week at the Iris location in Moreno Valley, and one week in Riverside, with schedules such as 1:00 or 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 or 10:00 p.m. in Murrieta and afternoon start times (e.g., 1:00 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.) in Riverside. The environment is high-volume and hospital-based, with frequent inpatient, ICU, and pediatric interactions, and involves specimen processing in accordance with established laboratory protocols. The role is per diem/on-call, with most available shifts arising from same-day call-outs; supervisors and schedulers contact you to offer shifts, and you may also pick up additional hours at medical office building locations throughout the region. Due to union agreements, scheduling can include potential split shifts or occasional cancellations up to two hours before a shift, but you can expect to work a minimum of around 30 hours per week after completing training. Weekends and holidays are part of the regular scheduling, with efforts made to rotate weekends and provide some weekends off from on-call duties.
