Job description

Your Role

The Specifications Specialist with Gensler's Southeast region is responsible for assisting project teams in preparing Preliminary Project Descriptions, Outline Specifications, and Construction Project Manuals. The role includes supporting project teams in their responsibility of researching materials, selection products, editing specifications and administering construction contracts. The supporting role includes training, mentoring, and collaborating with project teams to edit some specifications. Construction specifiers at Gensler are integrated project team members rather than departmentalized in-house consultants.

What You Will Do

  • Communicate firm best practices, policies, and procedures to project teams, with a focus on material research capabilities and sustainability.
  • Educate and mentor staff on master specification documents, construction document technology, and editing methodology.
  • Liaise with Manufacturers Representatives as needed for research and project support.
  • Provide specification editing support for a variety of Studios and Practice Areas.
  • Assist Regional Specification Leaders in developing and maintaining master specification documents.
  • Support Regional Specification Leaders in preparing and delivering educational materials on specifications and other technical topics.
  • Aid Regional Specification Leaders in conducting compliance training and monitoring activities.
  • Write technical specifications that comply with project requirements, industry standards, applicable laws, regulations, and building codes to ensure clarity, accuracy, and enforceability.
  • Leverage a broad knowledge of materials, construction methods, and technical requirements to recommend appropriate specifications, procedures, and document content while overseeing the production of complete, high-quality specifications.
  • Develop and maintain master specification sections to streamline project documentation and ensure consistency across projects. Regularly update these sections to reflect changes in construction industry standards, materials, and best practices.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Architecture or Interior Design from an accredited school preferred
  • Registered architect or interior designer preferred
  • 10+ years of experience in a similar role
  • Hold a Construction Document Technologist (CDT) certificate, or preferably be a Certified Construction Specifier (CCS)
  • Working knowledge of base building and interior fitout construction documentation preferred
  • Experience in building construction and interior fitout specifications writing required
  • Ability to edit and produce specifications from masters is preferred
  • Ability to write customized specification sections is a plus
  • Use of AIA MasterSpec through E-Specs to create and edit specifications sections is a plus
  • Ability to do conduct product and system research is desired
  • Good command of both written/oral English; Spanish and Portuguese a plus
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to organize and administer work for multiple projects with competing priorities

* This is not a remote position. We welcome applications from both part-time and full-time candidates. The selected candidate must reside in or be willing to relocate to the Baltimore or Washington, DC area upon acceptance. *
