What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Spatial Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To excel as a Spatial Data Analyst, you need a strong background in geography, GIS, data analysis, and a relevant degree such as geography, environmental science, or computer science. Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), spatial databases (like PostGIS), and programming languages such as Python or R is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are essential for accurately interpreting spatial data, generating actionable insights, and effectively sharing findings with stakeholders.

What are some typical challenges faced by spatial data analysts when working with large geospatial datasets?

Spatial data analysts often encounter challenges related to data quality and integration when working with large geospatial datasets. Issues such as inconsistent data formats, missing metadata, and varying spatial resolutions can complicate analysis. Additionally, managing the computational load of processing and visualizing large, complex datasets may require specialized software and robust hardware. Collaborating closely with GIS specialists, IT teams, and data engineers helps to address these challenges and ensure reliable results.

Spatial Data refers to the raw geographic information used in mapping and analysis, while a GIS Analyst actively interprets, analyzes, and visualizes this data to support decision-making. Both roles require similar credentials and are integral to GIS projects, but Spatial Data is the foundational information, whereas GIS Analysts focus on applying that data to solve spatial problems.

What is spatial data?

Spatial data, also known as geospatial data, refers to information about the physical location and shape of objects on Earth. This data is usually stored as coordinates and topology and can represent features such as buildings, roads, rivers, or even entire countries. Spatial data is used in mapping, geographic information systems (GIS), urban planning, environmental studies, and various other fields to analyze locations, patterns, and relationships. It can be stored in formats like vector (points, lines, polygons) or raster (grids, images). Understanding spatial data is essential for making informed decisions based on geographic information.

Job description

Vantor is forging the new frontier of spatial intelligence, helping decision makers and operators navigate what's happening now and shape what's coming next. Vantor is a place for problem solvers, changemakers, and go-getters-where people are working together to help our customers see the world differently, and in doing so, be seen differently. Come be part of a mission, not just a job, where you can: Shape your own future, build the next big thing, and change the world.

To be eligible for this position, you must be a U.S. Person, defined as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, Asylee, or Refugee.

Export Control/ITAR: Certain roles may be subject to U.S. export control laws, requiring U.S. person status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).

Please review the job details below.

What we need this person to do:

  • Own ambiguous, high-impact problem spaces across Vantor's product ecosystem
  • Define cross-product design frameworks, patterns, and experiences for spatial, data-heavy, and operational workflows
  • Shape interaction models for maps, imagery, layers, tasking, monitoring, analytics, and platform experiences
  • Partner deeply with Product and Engineering to define product direction, not just execute against requirements
  • Lead alignment across multiple teams and resolve ambiguity through structured design thinking
  • Establish reusable patterns and standards that improve clarity, consistency, and correctness across products
  • Raise the quality bar for design outputs, critique, documentation, and implementation readiness
  • Mentor senior designers and help them move from execution to system-level ownership
  • Use AI-enabled design practices to accelerate exploration, synthesis, prototyping, and decision-making while maintaining strong design judgment

What we should look for:

  • Deep experience designing complex enterprise, technical, operational, or mission-critical products
  • Proven ability to define systems, not just deliver screens or workflows
  • Strong product thinking and ability to influence roadmap, strategy, and prioritization
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity and creating structure where none exists
  • Strong facilitation skills, including leading workshops and aligning senior stakeholders
  • Experience working closely with engineering teams on complex technical systems
  • Strong portfolio evidence of cross-product impact, reusable frameworks, and system-level design thinking
  • Ability to communicate design rationale clearly to executive, product, engineering, and design audiences
  • Strong judgment around output quality, tradeoffs, risks, and decision-making under complexity
  • 5+ years of experience in product design, UX, or HCI
  • Deep expertise in visual design preferred

Nice-to-have experience:

  • Geospatial platforms, mapping tools, satellite imagery, defense tech, autonomy, operational systems, or intelligence products
  • Data visualization, analytics, AI-supported workflows, 3D/spatial interfaces, or command-and-control systems
  • Experience at companies building complex technical platforms such as Anduril, Palantir, UP42, or similar
  • Experience building or scaling design systems and cross-product interaction patterns
  • Experience mentoring senior designers or acting as a design lead across multiple teams
