Spanish Teacher
Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to facilitate a student-centered, communicative classroom that maximizes target language exposure. This role focuses on the development of interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills. The educator will utilize comprehensible input and authentic resources to ensure students gain functional fluency and the confidence to navigate real-world interactions in Spanish-speaking communities. This position will also serve students in the district's ELL programs.
Essential Functions
  • Deliver instruction in Spanish using comprehensible input strategies to build student fluency and comfort.
  • Design lessons that balance the three modes of communication: Interpretive (listening/reading), Interpersonal (conversing), and Presentational (speaking/writing).
  • Integrate authentic resources such as news clips, podcasts, literature, and social media from Spanish-speaking countries to provide a realistic context for language use.
  • Assess student progress based on proficiency levels rather than just grammar accuracy.
  • Provide regular, actionable feedback on student speaking and writing to encourage "risk-taking" and growth in the language.
  • Analyze assessment data to differentiate instruction for various learners.
  • Develop unit plans aligned with the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (The 5 Cs: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities).
  • Facilitate discussions and activities that investigate and explain the relationship between cultural practices and perspectives in the Spanish-speaking world.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to vertically align the Spanish curriculum across grade levels (e.g., ensuring Spanish 1 prepares students for Spanish 2).
  • Create a culturally responsive classroom environment that honors the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world and the backgrounds of the students.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly classroom, consistently enforcing school policies and procedures.

Additional Duties
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

  • Deep understanding of how the brain acquires a second language, specifically the difference between learning (memorization) and acquisition (internalization).
  • Ability to set realistic performance targets for students.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the history, literature, geography, and current events of various Spanish-speaking countries.
  • A strong grasp of Spanish syntax, morphology, and phonetics, with the ability to explain complex rules in simple, age-appropriate terms.
  • Near-native or superior fluency in Spanish, including the ability to narrate and describe in all major time frames (past, present, future).
  • Skill in using TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling).
  • Proficiency in language-specific tools like to provide students with authentic speaking opportunities.
  • The ability to scaffold lessons for students with different learning styles and those with IEPs/504 plans, while simultaneously challenging heritage speakers.
  • The ability to teach culture, moving beyond stereotypes to deep cultural perspectives and practices.
  • The ability to pivot a lesson when students are struggling to understand a concept in the target language without immediately reverting to English.
  • The ability to create a "low-anxiety" environment so that students feel safe making mistakes while speaking.
  • The ability to communicate with parents and stakeholders regarding the value of world language study in a 21st-century career path.

  • K-12 Spanish

Education:
  • Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
  • Masters Degree preferred.

Experience:

Salary Range: $47,834-$76,719
