Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) is seeking a Bilingual Family Peer Specialist (Spanish/English) to join our Child & Family WISe (Wraparound with Intensive Services) program. In this vital role, you will use your lived experience as a parent or caregiver of a youth with complex behavioral or emotional challenges to empower other families navigating similar journeys. You'll work side-by-side with caregivers to promote hope, resilience, and culturally responsive support as they access community resources and behavioral health services. .

Primary Responsibilities:

• Use personal lived experience to build trust with parents and caregivers, providing encouragement and validating their experiences.
• Provide culturally informed peer support to Spanish-speaking families, helping them navigate systems and build natural support networks.
• Offer individualized support in homes, schools, and community settings, including Child & Family Team meetings and IEP conferences.
• Assist caregivers in accessing resources such as housing, healthcare, transportation, food, and education for their families.
• Promote independent living skills, parenting support, and personal wellness for both caregivers and their youth.
• Support social engagement by encouraging and participating in community and recreational activities with families.
• Facilitate connections with peer advocacy groups and help families understand their rights, including the grievance process.
• Partner with clinicians to develop youth wellness plans and provide caregiver insight to the treatment team.
• Model and teach skills in daily living, financial management, nutrition, and healthcare access.
• Support families in crisis situations by assisting in safety planning and coordinating with crisis resources as needed.
• Provide interpretation between Spanish-speaking families and providers when appropriate, ensuring culturally competent communication.
• Maintain accurate documentation and follow all agency policies and HIPAA regulations.
• Drive to meetings, appointments, and community resources individually. Drive parent/caregiver to meetings, appointments, and community resources as deemed appropriate

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE: Experienced (minimum two years of job-related experience)

Experience raising a client involved with the mental health system

This position requires driving clients in a personal vehicle on behalf of the agency; therefore, the incumbent must meet agency driving requirements, including meeting the minimum age requirement of 21 years old, successfully completing a motor vehicle history check, possessing and maintaining a current, valid driver's license in the state of Washington, and having reliable, insured transportation.

LICENSURE: Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration. Completion of the Washington State Mental Health Division's Peer Counselor Training and the subsequent certification as a Peer Counselor within six months of employment.

LANGUAGE: Speech and writing fluency in both English and Spanish

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Associate's degree (Social Work, Psychology, or Behavioral Health field)

EXPERIENCE: Relevant experience working with clients with severe and persistent mental illness.

Capacity to work well with children and families.

Performance Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE:

1. Maintain a working knowledge of current trends in community mental health, including health care reform and automation of job tasks using computer technology.
2. Maintain certification as a Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths Assessor and administer this screening in person and over the phone as necessary to clients, caregivers, clinicians, social workers, and other community members
3. Maintain a working knowledge of mental health rehabilitation standards.
4. Working knowledge of the system of care and community resources.

SKILLS:

2. Communication : Communicates clearly and concisely.
3. Computer skills - The ability to operate a personal computer, fax machine, printer, and copier proficiently.

• Consistently be able to drive to appointments, meetings, and community events to support side-by-side support, provide encouragement, and positively model skills, communications, and areas focused on in the treatment plan.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, vehicle, etc.

Work Environment: Frequent mobility, driving/walking/standing/sitting required for extended periods.

Mental/Physical Requirements: While performing the job duties, the employee is required to walk, sit, drive, use hands and fingers, reach with arms, talk, or listen. Peripheral vision is also required for this position.
