Summary:

To provide patient, families, visitors, and staff access to employees who accurately interpret via face to face encounters during designated hours. Spanish Interpreters are bilingual and proficient in English and Spanish to interpret health care information to and from Spanish-speaking patients/patients families and Medical Center health care providers. Act as a Language liaison between the patient, family, and staff in support of the medical plan of care. Facilitates acquisition of Interpreter Services for non-Spanish Languages (via OPI/over the phone, VRI/video remote interpreter and/or contract services).
Education & Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent required.

1-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting with current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.

Previous interpretation / translation experience preferred.

Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patient's native language.

Certification/Licensure:
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers required within 30 days of employment and must be maintained per Medical Center Policy, MC 175

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.

Excellent communication and active listening skills.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

Ability to interact and communicate with people in-person and over the telephone, often in stressful situations.

Spanish interpreters / translators must meet Spanish proficiency levels defined by Cook Childrens Health Care System and measured by objective and nationally recognized oral language, reading and writing tests. All applicants are tested to determine their Spanish proficiency level.

To qualify for employment, applicants must meet minimally required Spanish proficiency levels. Testing will be administrated by a contracted testing service prior to completion of the employment process. Applicants must test at the proficient level to qualify.

Subsequent to employment, Spanish proficiency levels are verified as part of the employee's annual review. Testing is administered by a contracted testing service.
