Summary:

The Spanish Interpreter will provide patients, families, visitors, and staff access to employees who accurately interpret via face-to-face encounters during designated hours. Spanish Interpreters are bilingual and proficient in English and Spanish with the ability to interpret health care information to and from Spanish-speaking patients/patients' families and Cook Children's health care providers. Will act as a language liaison between the patient, family, and staff in support of the medical plan of care. Facilitates acquisition of Interpreter services for non-Spanish languages (via OPI/over the phone, VRI/video remote interpreter and/or contract services).

Hours: Must be available to work various hours including morning, evening, overnight, weekends, and holidays.

Note: ** Will require full time in-person training for 4-6 weeks at Cook Children's Fort Worth Medical Center.


Required Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • 1-2 years of experience working in a healthcare setting.

  • Current knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.

  • Previous interpretation/translation experience (preferred).

  • Ability to precisely and accurately translate critical medical information from English to the patient's native language.

  • Strong interpersonal, flexibility, and customer service skills.

  • Excellent communication and active listening skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

  • Ability to interact and communicate with people in-person and over the telephone, often in stressful situations.

Required Certification & Testing:

  • Selected applicants will be tested on their Spanish proficiency level to determine oral, reading, and writing skills prior to an offer being made, and must test at a proficient level as defined by Cook Children's Health Care System to qualify.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers is required within 30 days of employment and must be maintained.
