What is a SpaceX Pilot job?

A SpaceX Pilot is a highly trained astronaut responsible for operating and overseeing spacecraft during missions. They play a critical role in ensuring the safety of the crew, executing flight procedures, and communicating with mission control. Pilots may be involved in space station missions, orbital flights, or future Mars exploration efforts. They undergo extensive training in spacecraft systems, navigation, and emergency procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Spacex Pilot position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SpaceX Pilot, you typically need an advanced degree in engineering or a related field, significant flight experience (often including military or test pilot backgrounds), and certifications such as FAA commercial pilot licenses. Mastery of spacecraft control systems, simulators, and familiarity with mission-specific protocols are essential technical skills. Standout pilots demonstrate exceptional problem-solving abilities, composure under pressure, and strong teamwork and communication skills. These qualities are critical because piloting cutting-edge spacecraft requires real-time decision-making, seamless crew collaboration, and the ability to adapt to rapidly evolving mission situations.

What does a typical work schedule look like for a SpaceX Pilot, and how much time is spent in training versus actual missions?

SpaceX Pilots generally spend a substantial portion of their time in rigorous training, including flight simulation, physical conditioning, and mission rehearsals, which can comprise several months leading up to a mission. Actual spaceflight missions are less frequent, but they are highly demanding and require full commitment for extended periods, sometimes including pre- and post-mission preparation. The work schedule is highly variable, reflecting the dynamic nature of spaceflight operations, but often involves long hours, on-call periods, and intensive teamwork with engineers and crew. This structure ensures pilots are fully prepared for the technical, physical, and psychological demands of each mission while facilitating continual learning and readiness between flights.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
FACILITIES ENGINEER, LAUNCH INFRASTRUCTURE
As a Facilities Engineer at SpaceX, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the design, coordination, construction and documentation of critical systems and facilities supporting launch operations. This position emphasizes technical leadership across multiple disciplines to design, build, activate infrastructure, and drive cross-functional site-wide improvements to support SpaceX's mission of enabling human life on Mars. You will collaborate with a group of elite designers, engineers, and construction project managers across multiple disciplines to design, build, and commission infrastructure that will enable human life on Mars.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and issue drawings, design documentation, and reports for spaceport construction projects
  • Create, coordinate, and manage workflows for smooth integration of building information modeling (Revit/Civil 3D) models and geographic information systems (GIS) between in-housework and those completed by contractors.
  • Perform all calculations necessary for site development, facility infrastructure, and underground utilities for new facility and renovation projects
  • Build and manage geospatial platforms such as ArcGIS, Civil 3D, Revit, and other relevant software to support planning, design, and analysis
  • Drive coordination and design necessary to obtain local, state, and federal permits as it relates to construction projects
  • Use geospatial platforms to construct new map features and edit existing features such as parcels, roads, utilities, and buildings
  • Manage construction projects in the field, including quality control, conflict resolution, and coordination of a multi-discipline contractor team
  • Assist in piloting new technologies and implementing adopted technologies such as drones, virtual reality, augmented reality, 360 cameras, and laser scanning
  • Complete project control tasks, including project strategy, developing detail roadmap, scheduling, budgeting, and cost control

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience in design, analysis and/or construction

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineering (PE) license
  • Experience with project management of major construction projects including estimating, cost control, schedule, and contractor management
  • Proficiency in REVIT, NX, ArcGIS and/or Civil 3D platforms
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting equipment schematics, P&IDs, OEM manuals, and construction drawings
  • Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while maintaining a high sense of urgency in a high-paced, challenging work environment
  • Ability to perform trade studies and make clear recommendations using first principles and engineering fundamentals even with partial information
  • Self-motivated and able to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Strong interpersonal, diplomacy, and communication skills for summarizing accomplishments in fast-paced environments; detail-oriented, organized, with a high sense of urgency
  • Advanced Microsoft Office proficiency, Smartsheet, Jira, or project management tools (e.g., Microsoft Project, Primavera)

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to pass Air Force background check for Cape Canaveral
  • Provide 24/7 on-call support for critical activities and emergency situations; ability to work extended hours, evenings, weekends, and in dynamic operational environments
  • Occasional travel to SpaceX sites (e.g., ~10%); flexibility in schedules due to operational needs
  • Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise using appropriate personal protective equipment

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
