What are space policy analysts?

Space policy analysts are professionals who research, assess, and develop policies related to space activities, such as satellite regulation, international space treaties, and national security issues. They analyze political, legal, and technical developments in the space sector to advise governments, organizations, or companies. Their work often involves preparing reports, briefing policymakers, and collaborating with experts from various disciplines to shape the future of space exploration and utilization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Space Policy Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Space Policy Analyst, you need a strong background in policy analysis, international relations, and space law, typically supported by a relevant degree in political science, public policy, or a related field. Familiarity with research databases, data analysis tools, and government or international regulatory frameworks is essential. Excellent analytical thinking, clear communication, and collaboration skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies enable analysts to develop effective policy recommendations, navigate complex regulatory environments, and influence decision-making in the rapidly evolving space sector.

How does a Space Policy Analyst typically collaborate with technical experts and government stakeholders?

Space Policy Analysts frequently act as liaisons between policymakers, technical experts, and government agencies. They gather and synthesize input from engineers, scientists, legal advisors, and international partners to create informed policy recommendations. Regular meetings, briefings, and written reports are standard, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned on objectives and regulatory requirements. This collaborative approach is essential for addressing complex issues such as space debris mitigation, satellite regulations, and international cooperation.

STPI provides objective, high-quality analyses to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the National Space Council, and other federal agencies on critical science and technology policy issues. STPI researchers work collaboratively with government sponsors to address complex national challenges requiring scientific, technical, and analytical expertise.

  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary research teams and contribute technical expertise across a diverse portfolio of science and technology policy projects.
  • Build and sustain productive relationships with sponsors and external stakeholders to support ongoing collaboration and engagement.
  • Contribute to cross-organizational projects involving technical analyses conducted in partnership with IDA's Systems and Analyses Center (SAC), particularly the Science, Systems, and Sustainment (S3D) research division.

Qualifications

  • Prospective applicants must have a PhD with 3+ years or a terminal master's degree or JD with 8+ years of research or policy experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and develop rigorous analytical approaches to complex technical or policy issues.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including experience preparing technical reports and presenting findings to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Experience interacting with government agencies, industry, academia, or other stakeholders in the space sector.

Preferred Qualifications
