Position: Engineer I โ€“ Gas Distribution Design

Location: 725 West Peachtree NW, Atlanta, GA 30308 [Hybrid]
Duration: 2 Years

Position Overview

Theย Engineer I (Design Contractor)ย supports the planning, design, and development of gas distribution infrastructure and technical standards for natural gas projects.

This role is ideal for early-career engineers who are self-starters, strong communicators, and critical thinkers with an interest in utility infrastructure and natural gas systems.

Natural Gas is an essential part of Americaโ€™s energy mix, serving over 70 million homes and businesses. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the safe and reliable construction of natural gas facilities.


Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design Support

  • Assist in planning and designing gas distribution infrastructure projects.
  • Support development of technical standards for pipeline and gas facilities.
  • Perform system balances to evaluate system performance and identify improvements.
  • Design components and functionality of pipeline-related products.
  • Support gas storage and gas fueling station assignments.
  • Assist in mechanical equipment planning, maintenance, and design.

Construction & Field Support

  • Provide oversight and support for construction activities.
  • Review contractor-developed designs and cost estimates.
  • Conduct QA reviews of construction packages and specifications.
  • Transmit construction packages and support documentation.

Technical & Process Understanding

  • Apply engineering processes and design criteria to gas infrastructure projects.
  • Develop familiarity with:
    • Planning, design, construction, and maintenance processes
    • Internal utility operations
    • Industry and Southern Company design standards
  • Support material estimation and design standard development.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and maintain a safety-first work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or General Engineering)
  • 0โ€“5 years of related engineering experience
    (1โ€“3 years preferred for contractor role)
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Preferred

  • Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) certification
