Position Summary
Police Officer - Cadet
Department of Public Safety and Transit
Full Time
A cadet police officer is a paid trainee position within the Department of Public Safety at Southeast Missouri State University, designed to prepare individuals for a career in law enforcement. The successful candidate must attend and complete the SEMO Law Enforcement Academy program and in accordance with the Missouri Peace Officers Standard and Training Act of 1979 graduate with a Class A License by the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as first responder to calls for service from students, faculty, staff and visitors concerning criminal or civil complaints, maintenance problems, safety situations, parking, alarms sounding, etc
  • Assist in ensuring the safety and protection of students, employees and visitors on campus; provide transportation as appropriate
  • Patrol all properties, buildings, and grounds of the campus both in a vehicle and on foot, parking lots and roadways, residence halls and enforce all regulations concerning alcohol, noise and visitation
  • Enforce the rules and regulations of Southeast Missouri State University; Enforce city, state, and federal laws
  • Enforce regulations pertaining to security, safety and proper usage of university property, and be alert for hazards on the premises which could endanger the safety of persons on campus
  • Lock and unlock all doors, examine windows, lights and gates to ensure that they are secure
  • Permit authorized persons to enter campus and observe departing individuals in order to prevent theft of university property
  • Report all irregularities, fire hazards, leaks, etc. and make notifications to appropriate individuals for response
  • Participate in fire drills and traffic and parking control
  • Maintain training as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as it relates to the Clery Act
  • Maintain valid drivers license

Required Qualifications
  • Must have high school diploma or GED
  • Possess a valid Missouri operator's license
  • Willingness to attend SEMO Regional Law Enforcement Academy
  • Available to work flexible hours consisting of rotating shifts, to include days, evenings, midnights, weekends and holidays
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service
  • Demonstrated sound judgement in Handling sensitive situations with tact, discretion and confidentiality

Required Background Check: Must successfully pass all Assessments, Pre-Employment Testing, and Post-Offer Testing which at a minimum will include a criminal background check, polygraph exam and drug testing. Must be 21 years of age, a United States citizen, with no felony convictions of moral turpitude, or misdemeanor domestic violence convictions. Failure to pass will result in the employment offer being revoked.
