The Assistant Director of Energy Management, reporting to the Facilities Management Director, oversees all university energy programs and building operations to include campus facilities maintenance, distribution systems, energy production plants, and all system-wide energy-consuming assets. Is responsible for planning, development, implementation, and management energy efficiency projects and sustainability initiatives; Management of operational budgets, analyze energy consumption data, and review utility billing for accuracy; Ensures full alignment with all applicable energy codes, regulatory policies, institutional guidelines, and industry best practices; Provides leadership and daily supervision for the delivery Building and Operational Services functions and execution of routine maintenance, preventative maintenance schedules, and facility repairs across carpentry, plumbing, painting, mechanical, and electrical systems within Facilities Management Department.
Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor's degree in a job related field and 5 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 5 years' experience in higher education facilities management, or 2-year vocational building certificate and 7 years' experience in higher education facilities management. Certified Energy Manager and Certified Energy Auditor through the Association of Energy Engineers. Other applicable technical certifications or licenses; experience with any or all the following; School Dude work management and utility programs, Johnson Controls systems including METASYS energy management system, other energy savings and recycling programs.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of engineering theory and practice governing the generation and closed-loop distribution of hot water, chilled water, and electricity. Exercise strong critical thinking, deductive reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Resiliency in high-pressure environments, with a proven ability to maintain meticulous attention to detail and manage multiple concurrent tasks amidst frequent operational interruptions. Maintain strict confidentiality and handling sensitive institutional data with appropriate discretion. Advanced capability in interpreting complex blueprints, technical schematics, and diagnostic instruments. Demonstrated knowledge of modern building design, space allocation, construction methodologies, facilities planning, and asset maintenance-specifically focused on high-performance mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. Advanced computer literacy, including proven skill in navigating blueprints, technical schematics, and construction documentation alongside the execution of computerized Energy Management Systems (EMS). Proficient in the utilization of advanced computing systems, specialized engineering software, and modern digital productivity tools.
Able to effectively manage, audit, and oversee the performance of consulting engineers and contractors, paired with expertise in the procurement of specialty goods and facility services.
Effective supervision management and the ability to plan, organize, and direct comprehensive energy programs while leading rapid, effective responses to facility and utility emergencies.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to articulate complex technical data to diverse institutional stakeholders.   • Compile, analyze, and track monthly energy and utility consumption data, isolating performance breakdowns by individual building.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Reporting: Input accurate consumption metrics into the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to facilitate statutory reporting to the South Carolina Energy Office.
  • Building Automation Scheduling: Program and manage Building Energy Management Systems (EMS) to align heating, cooling, and lighting schedules with classrooms, special events, and variable facility use.
  • Policy Support: Evaluate historical utility data to identify efficiency trends, Develop and implement energy-conservation policies.
  • Waste Stream & Recycling Administration: Track campus-wide recycling and waste diversion metrics to generate comprehensive annual trash disposal and sustainability reports.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide operational support and mentor field technicians on industry best practices for energy efficiency and system optimization.

  • Hires, directs, and evaluates 3 FTE Trade Leads and 1 temporary trade. Provides safety oversight for a multidisciplinary crew including HVAC technicians, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters, locksmiths, and skilled trades workers.

  • Technical Vendor Oversight: Manage and audit the technical outputs of specialty trades, and external contractors for complex mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) infrastructure projects.
  • Project Governance: Oversee, audit, and manage the technical performance of external consulting engineers and specialty contractors to ensure contract compliance, quality control, and adherence to project timelines.
  • Design documents: Review capital project technical drawings to verify compliance with institutional standards, quality benchmarks, energy efficiency and serviceability.
