What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 or 4 depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO), Design Engineers (PFE-DE), and Rapid Response Team (PFE-RRT) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking Electrical Engineers. Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 $125,200 - $211,300
As a Nuclear Facilities Engineer 3 supporting LANL's plutonium facility, you will play a critical role in ensuring electrical safety, power quality, system monitoring, and the reliability of critical power systems. Your work will directly support the Lab's national security mission by maintaining and enhancing the performance and safety of essential infrastructure in a highly regulated nuclear environment.
You will lead and collaborate on projects involving facility modifications, new equipment installations, and infrastructure development-ensuring all systems meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and compliance. Your responsibilities may include:
• Conducting and reviewing complex engineering studies such as:
• Short-circuit analysis
• Device coordination
• Equipment sizing
• Fault current calculations
• Exterior lighting design
• Arc flash assessments for both medium- and low-voltage systems
• Supporting demolition, installation, upgrade, and repair activities
• Potentially qualifying as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) for one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) supporting LANL nuclear facilities

Depending on the assignment, you may serve in one of the following roles:
• PFE-Design Engineer: Work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to design and develop construction documents for nuclear facility infrastructure. Your work will support the highest standards of safety, reliability, and operational excellence.
• PFE-Rapid Response Team Member: Join a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary team focused on resolving issues that arise during construction execution. This team documents required changes, gains consensus on their acceptability, and implements solutions quickly minimizing delays and enabling field personnel to resume work efficiently.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 4 $150,300 - $260,800
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, in this level the selected candidate identifies and/or leads activities within a nuclear facility engineering discipline, demonstrating initiative, technical depth, and leadership in complex project environments. The candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team, applying broad and diversified knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles and practices in the preparation and execution of nuclear facility engineering deliverables. This includes utilizing nuclear engineering technology to accomplish work safely and efficiently while continuously improving engineering and work processes to meet evolving customer and mission needs. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical foundation, sound judgment, and the ability to integrate requirements across multiple systems and disciplines to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable facility operations. The candidate can either be a Electrical Engineer or another engineering discipline (such as a Mechanical Engineer) with demonstrated experience or the willingness and ability to support facility electrical systems within LANL's nuclear facilities.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in the design, maintenance, and operation of low-voltage and instrumentation & control (I&C) systems
  • Skilled in applying and interpreting engineering codes and standards in regulated environments, including IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA 70, and NFPA 70E
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex engineering analyses and develop technically sound, defensible solutions
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical issues to diverse audiences
  • Proven success leading multidisciplinary teams, managing multiple projects, and meeting tight deadlines
  • Experience mentoring others, providing technical direction, and coordinating engineering activities
  • Advanced proficiency with technology-aided design tools (e.g., CAD, CAE) and analytical modeling to support innovative engineering solutions
  • In-depth understanding of safety principles and hazard mitigation in nuclear or industrial facility operations

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Extensive expertise in nuclear facility engineering processes, maintenance techniques, work planning and control, quality assurance, safety basis, and other nuclear facility safety management programs
  • Demonstrated experience applying and interpreting DOE/NNSA, industry, and regulatory codes, standards, and criteria relevant to nuclear facility engineering
  • Expert knowledge of nuclear facility engineering principles, procedures, guides, and administrative practices
  • Proven ability to prepare and review technical reports and studies to establish and maintain the technical baseline for new and existing facility systems
  • Skilled in defining and collecting performance, safety, and operational metrics for structures, systems, and components
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency in defining and executing design and analysis tasks that meet both regulatory and performance requirements
  • Experienced in developing design details, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections incorporating applicable design and nuclear safety requirements

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees maybe eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
