What is a sommelier manager?

A Sommelier Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the wine program at a restaurant or hospitality venue. This role involves selecting, purchasing, and managing the wine inventory, as well as training staff and assisting guests with wine choices. The Sommelier Manager ensures that the wine list complements the menu and enhances the dining experience. They also manage costs, negotiate with suppliers, and may organize wine-related events or tastings. Their expertise in wine and service helps elevate the establishment's reputation and customer satisfaction.

How does a sommelier manager typically collaborate with chefs and other restaurant staff to enhance the guest experience?

A Sommelier Manager works closely with chefs to design wine pairings that complement the restaurant's menu and seasonal offerings. They also train servers and front-of-house staff on wine knowledge, service techniques, and proper storage. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, wine inventory software, and cellar management tools is crucial. Exceptional interpersonal skills, leadership, and the ability to educate and inspire both staff and guests set top performers apart.
