What is a solution engineer?

A Solution Engineer is a professional who bridges the gap between technical and business teams by designing, presenting, and implementing technology solutions tailored to a client's needs. They work closely with sales teams to understand customer requirements and demonstrate how products or services can solve specific business problems. Solution Engineers often provide technical expertise during the pre-sales process, create proof-of-concepts, and ensure smooth integration of solutions. Their role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and technical skills to translate complex concepts into practical solutions.

How do solution engineers typically collaborate with sales and technical teams during the sales cycle?

Solution Engineers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between sales and technical teams. During the sales cycle, they often work closely with sales representatives to understand client requirements, deliver technical presentations, and tailor demonstrations to showcase how a product meets specific business needs. They also engage with product and engineering teams to address feasibility concerns, customize solutions, and ensure proposed implementations are technically sound. This collaborative environment requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solution engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solution Engineer, you need a strong technical background in software engineering or IT, analytical problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant degree or certifications. Familiarity with CRM systems, cloud platforms, APIs, and tools like Salesforce or AWS is often required. Excellent communication, presentation, and collaboration skills help you effectively translate client needs into technical solutions. These competencies ensure that you can design, demonstrate, and implement solutions that meet client requirements and drive business success.

Job description

The Appian Solution Engineering team, provides elite technical expertise to our customers and partners around the globe. Operating at the intersection of Information Security, Business Technology, and Cloud Architecture, our engineers touch every layer of the product. We thrive in a culture of respect, inclusion, and continuous learning, working closely together to tackle the most challenging data, performance, and infrastructure puzzles encountered by our user base.

As an Associate Solution Engineer, you will occupy a foundational, highly versatile execution role. This position is vital right now because rapid software adoption and complex multi-tenant cloud ecosystems require creative engineers who can span multiple disciplines - from data analytics to systems administration. Acting as a technical "Jack/Jill of All Trades," you will dive deep into the platform's codebase, identify performance bottlenecks, and partner directly with major global corporations to guarantee absolute Enterprise-Grade Orchestration.

This role is based at our headquarters in McLean, Virginia. Appian was built on a culture of in-person collaboration, which we believe is a key driver of our mission to be the best. Employees hired for this position are expected to be in the office 5 days a week to foster that culture and ensure we continue to thrive through shared ideas and teamwork. We believe being in the office provides more opportunities to come together and celebrate working with the exceptional people across Appian.

What You'll Do

  • Deliver Exceptional Customer Interaction: Provide world-class technical support and strategic engineering guidance (both verbal and written) directly to our largest enterprise customers and global partners.
  • Diagnose & Solve Complex Problems: Dive deep into application logs, system behaviors, and unexpected anomalies to design creative, long-term technical solutions.
  • Drive Continual Platform Improvement: Collaborate closely with client engineering teams to continuously optimize the availability, speed, functionality, and security of their platform deployments.
  • Leverage Data Analytics: Analyze complex system performance telemetry, usage metrics, and transaction trends to proactively identify optimization opportunities.
  • Support Enterprise Availability: Participate in a flexible, low-frequency after-hours support rotation (approximately once every 10-15 weeks) to ensure continuous global operations.
  • Engage in Continuous Growth: Take advantage of elite corporate development tracks, including Appian University, technical presentation training, and specialized business programs to accelerate your career trajectory.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree or Master's in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related STEM field with a strong academic record.
  • Communication: Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a professional environment and translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable solutions for global clients.
  • Experience: Prior experience in a professional, academic, or technical setting (includes internships, research, capstones, or consistent part-time/full-time employment).
  • Analytical Mindset: A strong passion for data analysis, reverse-engineering complex workflows, and discovering how software systems interact under heavy enterprise loads.
  • Support Enterprise Availability: Provide after business hours support for proper handoff with our other regions as needed. In addition, flexibility to provide after hours weekend support for up to 14 weeks per year - Up to 1 quarter per year working this adjusted schedule may be required (Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Foundational programming or scripting experience using languages such as Java, C#, Python, Ruby, Perl, or PHP.
  • Exposure to Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) and querying structures, including MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server.
  • Basic systems administration familiarity across Linux or Windows operating environments.
  • Proven fluency in AI and LLMs, encompassing both the strategic development of AI-powered platform capabilities and the hands-on application of AI tools to accelerate daily workflows.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (e.g. executive roles in student organizations, club leadership, or captaincy of team-based activities).

At this time, Appian will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.

Thank you for your interest in joining our team! Please note that we will officially begin reviewing applications and scheduling interviews starting August 2026. We appreciate your patience and look forward to connecting with you then.
