What is a solution architect?

A Solution Architect is a professional responsible for designing and overseeing the implementation of complex technology solutions to meet specific business needs. They work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements, select appropriate technologies, and create architectural blueprints that guide development teams. Solution Architects ensure that all parts of a project integrate smoothly and align with organizational goals, balancing technical and business considerations. Their role often involves problem-solving, risk management, and providing technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solution architect?

To thrive as a Solution Architect, you need a strong background in software engineering, systems design, and business analysis, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in IT architecture. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), modeling languages (such as UML), and certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set outstanding Solution Architects apart. These skills ensure the design of scalable, effective solutions that align with organizational goals and integrate seamlessly across complex technical environments.

How does a solution architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project lifecycle?

Solution Architects work closely with cross-functional teams such as developers, business analysts, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. They participate in requirement gathering sessions, translate business needs into technical specifications, and guide the development team through architectural best practices. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as Solution Architects often mediate between technical and non-technical team members to resolve challenges and maintain project momentum. This role frequently involves presenting architectural decisions, soliciting feedback, and ensuring alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

Do solution architects make a lot of money?

Solution architects typically earn high salaries due to their specialized skills in designing complex systems and their experience with cloud platforms, software development, and enterprise architecture. Salaries vary based on industry, location, and experience but generally range from $100,000 to over $150,000 annually. Certifications like AWS or TOGAF can also enhance earning potential.

Is a solution architect a hard job?

A solution architect role is often considered challenging because it requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to design complex systems that meet business needs. The job can involve long hours, high responsibility, and staying current with evolving technologies and industry standards. Success in this role typically depends on experience, certifications, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

  • Engage with customer engineering teams to demonstrate products, scope integrations, configure authentication, and troubleshoot API issues.

  • Own the technical onboarding process for new customers, including configuring authorization flows and resolving integration issues.

  • Handle escalated technical support issues, perform root-cause analysis, and build technical documentation and tools to support customer success.

Job description

The Role
The Solution Architect is Akoya's technical bridge between our network and the customers building on top of it, engaging from the earliest pre-sales conversations through implementation, go-live, and ongoing support. This role reports to the Head of Customer Solutions & Support. Solution Architects work hands-on with customer engineering teams - demonstrating the product, scoping integrations, configuring authentication and SSO, and troubleshooting API issues - while building trusted relationships with stakeholders ranging from individual developers to executives. It's a highly technical, customer-facing role that combines deep API and security expertise with strong communication and problem-solving instincts.
As a Solution Architect, you will:
  • Pre-Sales & Solutioning
    • Serve as the primary technical resource for prospective and new Akoya customers throughout the sales cycle
    • Deliver technical product demonstrations and proofs-of-concept tailored to a customer's use case and existing stack
    • Gather, document, and assess integration requirements and technical specifications directly with customer engineering teams
    • Build sample code, Postman collections, or lightweight integration prototypes to validate feasibility and de-risk deals before contract signature
    • Be assertive in recommending the right solution architecture for a customer's needs and willing to raise the flag when a customer's proposed approach won't work
  • Implementation & Onboarding
    • Own the technical onboarding of new customers from contract signature through go-live
    • Configure and troubleshoot delegated authorization flows (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML) and SSO integrations hands-on with customer teams
    • Debug REST/JSON API integration issues using tools such as Postman, curl, browser dev tools, and network/packet traces
    • Write and maintain integration guides, runbooks, and technical documentation for customers and internal teams
    • Run joint testing and troubleshooting sessions with customer technical teams through go-live
  • Post-Sales & Support
    • Handle escalated technical support issues, performing hands-on root-cause analysis across API, network, and authentication layers
    • Serve as the customer's technical advocate internally, relaying feedback and requirements to Product and Engineering
    • Partner with Product Development to improve deployment ease, documentation, and self-serve tooling based on field experience
    • Build and refine internal tools, scripts, and sample integrations that speed up future customer onboarding
  • Relationships & Communication
    • Build trusted technical relationships with customer engineering leads, architects, and decision-makers
    • Present technical concepts clearly to audiences ranging from individual developers to executive stakeholders
    • Travel occasionally to customer sites, conferences, or partner meetings as needed

Required Experience & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent hands-on professional experience
  • 10+ years of experience in a client-facing role.
  • A minimum of 4-6 years of hands-on technical and design experience.
  • Proficiency in Go, with working exposure to JavaScript (Node.js), Python, or Java, comfortable writing and debugging real integration code, and code reviews
  • Deep, hands-on knowledge of RESTful JSON APIs, including designing, testing, and troubleshooting them (Postman, curl, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience implementing and troubleshooting Delegated Authorization frameworks (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML), including direct experience configuring SSO
  • Strong understanding of how the internet works under the hood: DNS, proxies, firewalls, load balancers, CDNs, and TLS/certificates
  • Exceptional communication and able to flex between whiteboard-level technical detail and executive-level framing
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and a bias toward hands-on diagnosis over escalation
  • Comfortable being client-facing, including raising concerns when a customer's proposed direction won't work
  • Flexibility to travel occasionally

Preferred Experience/Skills
  • Hands-on cloud experience, preferably AWS (IAM, API Gateway, Lambda, VPC/networking)
  • Experience working in a fintech or other regulated financial services environment
  • Familiarity with open banking / financial data standards: Financial Data Exchange (FDX), OFX, and FIX
  • Working knowledge of security and privacy compliance frameworks (NIST, ISO 27001, PCI DSS, SOC 2)
  • Prior experience as a Solutions Architect, Sales/Systems Engineer, or Developer Advocate in a technical pre-sales or customer-facing role
  • Experience building internal tools, SDKs, or sample apps that accelerate partner integrations
